I just talked to my plumber about them and he said they are a great idea expecially for the ice maker line which can cause a lot of problems. That little tiny hose can drain lots of water in a very short time!! Sue found this while shopping online for dehumidifier. Sue brought it up to me and so decided I should post it for others as well. You can put them next to areas that could flood and not be noticed. My basement floor is graded to slop to a drain so a water heater or wash machine that had a hose that broke or leak would go down drain, but if you don't have an open drain in basement, that would be good place. I'm putting one in bathroom with tub just in case I'm distracted by something while running a bath. I think I would turn off water before answering but if I just went off to get something and was distracted by something significant I fear an overflowing tub could happen. Sue mentioned perhaps in kitchen if you have an ice maker. Those water lines can break, dishwasher can flood too. Seems it would be a handy gadget. Don't leave home with ANYTHING running though. **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Guest guest
Thanks. The water line to a refrigerator ice maker in a condo unit above my Mother's condo broke while the person was not home, and flooded condo above my Mom and then water poured down into my Mom's condo through the chandelier electrical box opening. It took forever to get it turned off because couldn't get into condo. Major water damage to my Mom's place, and actually my Mom didn't feel well afterward for a long time and then died of Leukemia. I often wondered if any connection now that I know how inadequate cleanup procedures can be. So for me, I my refrig doesn't have an ice maker and my opinion of living in condos changed after that experience. When I arrived at my Mom's place we had to wait so long for someone to get into unit above and otherwise we were helpless. So, turning the water off to your washer, etc, is wise in case things happen when you aren't home. > expecially for the ice > maker line which can cause a lot of problems. Guest guest
I have same fear about condos. My stepmother moved from large house to small one with small yard, ranch, garage door right into kitchen, with one step up...would be good no steps in case of wheelchair or other moving problems but worked for her. Small flat lot you could get someone to cut for not too much I think. HOWEVER house had indoor air q problems I do believe as it had finished basement and she and her son, who moved into the finished basement developed health problems. Her son moved in to recuperate from surgery. They both ended up moving into nursing home, she was 90 but he was only 58!. I posted about him before, he became sick, not sure of symptoms and then stepmom said he lost his mind. It was hard to get any information out of her as she didn't like to talk about him, but he was normal all the time I knew him, not even slightly odd. I tried to get his address info but she would always side step conversation. She also was difficult to talk to due to confusion. But at her age can not blame house but it may have been. Many people live to very old age and keep their minds until they die. so it is not a foregone conclusion that old age= confusion. She'd always say his brother and sister were " taking care of his affairs " and his situation, so I guess she felt that was enough and she didn't want me to see him in his condition. A great deal of shame for relatives goes along with that. Anyway, so home setup seemed ideal but this house I don't believe was safe. That is one reason I am sticking it out with my house. I really think I need to learn to solve indoor air problems or I will just run into them again and the expense of moving here and there more than the exexpense of fixing my own place and learning from it. Of the two temporary places I stayed at, one of them I did MUCH worse in than my own home. Anyway, that is what I am considering or condo that is obviously well managed, and make sure yourself everything is done properly to fix it. My Mom, and I, didn't know much about water damage at the time it happened. Just the mess and trouble of it all. The helplessness of the leak coming from an empty unit you can't get into. > > > I've heard so many condo nightmares! I don't know what we will do when we > get older.
