Guest guest
Hi Lois - 5 mcg total of Cytomel per day is a low dosage. I know you wanted to start slow to allow yourself to adjust to the hormone, but it may be time to titrate up again. You will probably need to do this several times. Talk to your doc about it and checking your labs. From what I read here, looks like most people are on at least 25 mcg Cytomel per day.. see the " Dosing " section: http://www.drugs.com/cons/cytomel.html To give you an idea, you're not even quite at the equivalent of 25 mcg levothyroxine or 1/4 grain Armour, which are the lowest dosages they make in those formulations: http://thyroid.about.com/library/drugs/blconversionchart.htm > > hi again friends, > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and evening. > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before treatment. > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would appreciate any thoughts. > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > thank you. lois >
Guest guest
bless you susan, i just had an instinct that that was the case but i wanted some ideas to take with me to the doc today. i was hoping someone would respond in time. thank you for that and the link. i copied the chart to take with me. i was also wondering to myself if taking that low dose for a month could have knocked out my body's natural ability to manufacture the T3, T4, that it provided pre medication. i've never experienced this ultra fatique before. i will get my lab reports today when i see the doc. hopefully that will show something. thanks again so much susan! lois > > > > hi again friends, > > > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and evening. > > > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before treatment. > > > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would appreciate any thoughts. > > > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > > > thank you. lois > > >
Guest guest
No problem, Lois. From what I understand, what often happens in the early stages of Hashimotos is that the thyroid and pituitary go into " emergency " mode, because a minimum amount of thyroid hormone is needed to survive. So typically the pituitary starts sending out loads of hormone (TSH) to stimulate the thyroid - that works for a while but of course the poor thyroid can't keep up. So I'm suggesting it may seem like you had a more ideal level of thyroid in your system prior to taking hormone, but it was not sustainable and you were taxing your endocrine system. Could be your body is feeling a bit of relief to have minimum levels of hormone met again, but that doesn't mean you have enough to feel optimal. All speculation on my part, but could be what is going on. I am curious why your doc didn't add Cytomel to your Synthroid instead of replacing Synthroid with Cytomel alone. But in any case, it was smart to try a different protocol. Let us know how your visit goes, and do post your lab results if you have them. > > > > > > hi again friends, > > > > > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > > > > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and evening. > > > > > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > > > > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before treatment. > > > > > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > > > > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would appreciate any thoughts. > > > > > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > > > > > thank you. lois > > > > > >
Guest guest
Lois,I was the exact same way before I tried the natural thyroid from a compounding pharmacy. I was super tired before being diagnosed and then put on synthroid. Synthroid helped with my tiredness a little, but I gained 30 pounds. THat's when I decided to try the Natural Dessicated Thyroid and I have not gained any more weight...and I can go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 6am and feel good. (before I'd go to bed at 8 and wake up at 8 and still be tired). My guess is that right now, you are being severely under treated. Might be worth a try- to try the NDT. Guest guest
hi susan, he said that he was taking me off synthroid last month, coz i was gaining weight. he left me with that small dose of cytomel and told me to come back in one month. when he saw me on friday, i think he got nervous. he said hashis is hard to regulate, which i knew anyway, but was happy that he is willing to try. anyway, he put me on 25mcgs of synthroid, and told me to increase it to 50 mcgs in 2 weeks. he told me to continue the 2.5 mcgs of cytomel twice a day too. when he discontinued my synthroid one month ago, i was on 6.25mcgs once a day with the cytomel. i think it sounds weird to go from 6.25 right up to 25mcgs. i took the 25mcgs yesterday and another dose today, and i'm still wiped out and dragging. i wonder when it will kick in? TSH .83 Total T3 1.33 Total T4 7.5 A.M Cortisol 18.3 when i listened to dr hashkill's video he said optimum tsh should be between .5 and 1, so it seems i'm at optimum level. go figure. thank you again. lois > > > > > > > > hi again friends, > > > > > > > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > > > > > > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and evening. > > > > > > > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > > > > > > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before treatment. > > > > > > > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > > > > > > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would appreciate any thoughts. > > > > > > > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > > > > > > > thank you. lois > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Lois - you might want to ask him to test your free T4 and free T3 next time, instead of totals. Many people feel they are a better indicator of what you have avail in your bloodstream, vs. what is bound and unavailable. Regardless, do you have the total T4/ T3 reference ranges? The TSH is not accurate for everyone and is only one indicator to review. But because your TSH does look optimal now, you should be cautious and let your doc know if you get the pounding heart back (feel over-stimulated, etc). Sounds like he thinks you adjusted better to Cytomel alone at first, but wants to try you on a combo of T4/ T3 now. It is all trial and error, really, as we all respond differently to different things. But the Synthroid + Cytomel he has put you on now is a much more reasonable dosage, long-term. Fingers crossed for you. > > > > > > > > > > hi again friends, > > > > > > > > > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > > > > > > > > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and evening. > > > > > > > > > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > > > > > > > > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before treatment. > > > > > > > > > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > > > > > > > > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would appreciate any thoughts. > > > > > > > > > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > > > > > > > > > thank you. lois > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Have you considered asking him to switch you to natural thyroid, or increasing your cytomel? It still sounds like you are not getting enough T3. Increasing the synthroid (T4) isn’t going to change that. Guest guest
hi my name is Lori. I was just recently switched to synthroid to and had to go back to eltroxin instread but i still feel tired no matter what one i use. Does anyone know can you use a natural type with your other meds, or do you go off them and just use something natural. I no longer have a thyroid i had a TT done do to cancer? Guest guest
Hi Lori - sorry to hear you're struggling with your meds. I do hear often that people with TTs struggle for a while. You can combine natural and synthetic hormones. Some people believe natural thyroid hormone works better for them because it's not synthetic, so they go cold turkey on the synthetics. It may be simpler to try that first. I think the natural hormone options all have a higher ratio of T3 to T4 than what a human thyroid makes - that works well for some people, others perhaps not so much, so adding a little synthetic T4 could make sense. Anyway, there is no problem doing a combo. I'm sure you'll need to work closely with your doc and probably try different things. Best of luck - keep us posted. > > > > > > Lois,I was the exact same way before I tried the natural thyroid from a compounding pharmacy. Guest guest
hi susan and wendy, i don't recall if i told you that when i went to the doc last friday in my " wiped out " condition, he seemed to be very concerned. he put me back on synthroid. this time 25 mcgs to be increased to 50 mcgs in 2 weeks. i started the 25mcgs last friday, and continue with the cytomel 2.5 mcgs a.m and p.m. when he discontinued my cytomel the month before, i was only taking 6.25mcgs. he didn't seem to take that into consideration tho. on monday and tuesday i had about half a day of feeling better. then wednesday i relapsed back to bed with the ultra fatigue. i guess my bod is still adjusting. doc said if all goes well he will put me on the combination synthroid/cytomel eventually. dr haskills video said the combo drug should be started at the beginning and not once the others had been prescribed. unfortunately, i have no control over how my doc orders stuff. i tell him what i read, but it doesn't seem to influence his decision so i'll have to wait til he figures it out for himself. i can see from reading all of your posts that this is the norm and i'm am not the exception. i read again that most docs will not treat hashis at all, so i guess i am lucky that mine is at least trying. i thank you again for your ideas and support. lois > > > > > > > > > Lois,I was the exact same way before I tried the natural thyroid from a compounding pharmacy. Guest guest
hi JJ. i just now found your message, sorry. yes i did ask him a few times to increase my cytomel. he kept saying he would but that he wanted to go slow. i told him that the minimum dose i read was 5mcg a.m and p.m. he just keeps on with his own ideas, so i decided to wait til he catches up on his own (with any luck) next time i go i will suggest the natural desicated thyroid as you and wendy have suggested. i'm not going to expect much, but i willl try to convince him. thanks for your input and support. lois > > > > > > > > > > hi again friends, > > > > > > > > > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep > watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was > totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed > as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > > > > > > > > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was > concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and > evening. > > > > > > > > > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and > moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the > 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > > > > > > > > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before > treatment. > > > > > > > > > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > > > > > > > > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would > appreciate any thoughts. > > > > > > > > > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > > > > > > > > > thank you. lois > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
hi again susan and wendy, i saw the doc today. i am still wiped out but a little better since the synthroid 25mcgs 2 wks ago. he is now increasing to 50 mcgs for the next 2 weeks. he was trying to explain to me about T3 and T4, but i couldn't understand him. he said he wants to see how i do on the increased synthroid and then if i want, he will switch me over to the natural desicated thyroid. i gained another 8 lbs for a total of 28 lbs. eeeek. hope you are doing well, and i thank you again for your help. lois > > > > > > > > > > hi again friends, > > > > > > > > > > last week fri and sat i was more tired than usual falling asleep > watching t.v. and going to bed early and getting up late. by monday, i was > totally wiped out. don't know what else to call it. totally fatigued, in bed > as tho i had a flu but no cold or flu symptoms. > > > > > > > > > > about a month ago i was taken off synthroid, because doc was > concerned about my weight gain, and put on cytomel 2.5mcg, morning and > evening. > > > > > > > > > > on cytomel, i noticed that my pulse went slower at 52 in the a.m and > moved up during the day to 82 in the evening. this week pulse changed to the > 60s all day long, same as it was before i began any thyroid med. > > > > > > > > > > on synthroid my pulse was about 88, up from my usual 60s before > treatment. > > > > > > > > > > i am so sluggish it's hard to even get myself out of the bed. > > > > > > > > > > if anyone has any idea of what could have happened i would > appreciate any thoughts. > > > > > > > > > > history: diagnosed with hashimotos early this year. > > > > > > > > > > thank you. lois > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
