Hi Jeff, I bought the fiberglass type of a/c filter you get in your

hardware store, and my boyfriend cut it to fit into the Holmes double

window fan that has an added snap-on piece for a filter. (I really did

not like the crapola filter that came with it which was some dark mesh

material). Is this safe? I got worried maybe little bits of fiberglass

would blow into my room altho this seems unlikely because you're

supposed to cut them and fit them into a/c's.

I know it still won't help a LOT with soot and dust but maybe it will

help some.

Just want to be sure it's safe.

Thanks a lot. If you say it is I'm going to do the same with my other

window.

Wish they would make these fans with enough filter space to put a

really nice filter medium.

Jeff will probably answer but to be quicker about it. I wouldn't let

wind blow through fiberglass that any fibers may be loose. Jeff has

recommended Webb filters. If you put Webb into 'message search' you

will find it. You can also go to Home Depot and get Filtrete brand

loose filter fabric. It's there, in a box, not obvious. Ask for it.

You can cut that to any size and tape it to where you want it. You

breath in fiberglass, it's in you forever.

I will google that.

Why would they sell them for window a/c's if they are that dangerous?

Jill, I don't think they do sell them for window a/c. However they do

sell them for central furnace assemblies. I just am concerned about

the fact that you are cutting it. If you seal the edges where you cut

it with something strong like ducttape it may be okay but spun

fiberglass filters do not filter out much of anything. In the house, I

think just visible size dust. Unless I'm picturing something different

than you bought. Just ignore my opinion on that. That is just me.

Fiberglass has been named a carcinogen by the State of CA. I don't

know why not broader than that. However does recommend the

WEBB filter at the message no I gave for window a/c units so that might

work.
