Guest guest
Thank you both for the advice. We went back for an xray today and it appears that she is just really backed up but has no other obstruction. Impaction doesn't seem to be an issue anymore, so we are just going along with the miralax therapy to clean her out this time. I plan to continue with the more stringent dietary changes I started this week and to gradually wean her off the miralax, then use more natural substances to keep her regular in the future. We did get a GI referral so hoping to get more in-depth insight into causes and long-term solutions. Thanks again for the insight and advice! > > I was reading with great interest the " help! " thread because we are going through the same thing with my dd7. Yesterday we took her to the ER on our pedi's advice b/c she has gone almost 4 weeks without a substantial BM (save for a fairly good one over the weekend after giving a fleet laxative). She's been having small BMs in her underwear for the past 4 weeks . > > The ER was not able to dislodge anything after an only partially successful attempt at administering an enema. (She was highly resistant to the enema and I think much it ended up on the table.) So they wanted to keep her for at least a couple of days (!) and attempt to get things moving by administering fluids through a feeding tube. This sounded excessive to me so I asked if there was treatment we could do at home. > > They recommended a capful of miralax 3 times per day with plenty of fluids for 2 days. If this doesn't get things moving they want to readmit her for a couple of days to do the feeding tube. > > So my question to you is 1) would you do the high-dose miralax treatment as a short-term solution (for the next 2 days) to avoid hospitalization, or would you try some of the more natural remedies posted here (smooth move, plumsmart w/xylitol, etc.). I worry about a rebound effect if we go the miralax route. (My pedi is all for miralax and thinks it's perfectly safe, so it's pointless to ask him.) > > 2) If the high-dose miralax treatment doesn't work, would you agree to hospital admittance and treatment described above? They don't feel it's necessary to do xrays or ultrasounds or any other tests, they just want to administer fluids (and maybe medication?) through a tube to get things moving. This just sounds crazy to me--she has had chronic constipation before (i.e. several weeks of a distended tummy and encopresis) that was eventually resolved by several weeks of miralax (before of course returning again a few weeks or months later). > > This latest incident was probably my fault because I allowed too much cheese in her diet for several days but have not had her on miralax in a quite a while, so there was nothing to offset the dietary slipups. > > TIA, > Robin >
