Guest guest
it's weird. years ago I had to go over to UNLV to pick up something in the admin building. As soon as I walked in there it felt like I was inhaling razors in my mouth. I couldn't figure it out, so I immediately put a tissue over my face and went in, when I got to the office I was heading I found out that 3 days prior they did asbestos remidation. So apparently even with all the " precautions " there are floating fibers that remain for days! Took about 24 hours for the " cuts " to abate. Guest guest
The only health effect I know of from asbestos is lung cancer. Google asbestos for more detailed information. Also, OSHA strictly governs asbestos as does the state of California. California (and Colorado) has the strictest laws about who can test and who can remove asbestos. Their web sites also address health effects. Carl Grimes Healthy Habitats LLC ----- > Anyone exposed to asbestos in their sick building? Anyone know > firsthand about the symptoms? Guest guest
If asbestos remediation was done according to federal and state regulations, the site surfaces and air would were required to be tested " clean " before people would be allowed in. Yes, fibers can float for days, so if what was assulting your mouth was asbestos then the remediation was not done properly. Asbestos is one of the substances highly regulated and highly tested before clearance is given. People have gone to federal prision for failing to do so. The asbestos situation, while far from perfect, is not the wild, wild west like mold is. Guest guest
It has been banned for new materials in the US but not for materials from other countries. Therefore, there is no certainty that ANY material installed is free of asbestos until it is tested. Many states are requiring inspectors and workers be licensed and certified by the State. There are also OSHA requirments for the workers. Guest guest
Hi Carl, There are also many other building materials that have similar health effects to asbestos fibers - and are legal. Here is the direction of one of the foremost experts on these matters: R. Harbut, MD, MPH, FCCP CoDirector, National Center for Vermiculite and Asbestos-Related Cancers Karmanos Cancer Institute Wayne State University Chief, Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine 118 N. Guest guest
I was exposed to insulation in my house airbourne and it caused intense itching of skin, irritation to my eyes and throat, coughing. It was mineral wool but any tiny particles airbourne that you breath can be dangerous to your health. Even though all insulation was vacuumed out of attic and filters added and air much cleaner I continue to have easily irritated throat, no matter where I am, home or work or out. I think unfortunately this will be life long problem as tiny particles get embedded in your tissue and stay there. From my reading on asbestos that is what happens so I would think you would have some symptoms in your airways, nose, throat, lung. I would think skin also just logically but perhaps some people have less sensitive skin than me. I know someone who is in indoor air field that deal alot with fiberglass and think someday it will be considered a health hazard as aesbestos is now, and we all have it everywhere. Here are some links to info on asbestos. One to American Lung association near the bottom of page would probably be good source: http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/asbestos/ > > Anyone exposed to asbestos in their sick building? Guest guest
I agree with Carl. Asbestosis is strictly a lung disease. The mayo clinic site is very helpful in finding out about many different health conditions, including asbestosis... http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/asbestosis/DS00482/DSECTION=symptoms Ginger AKA allergy girl -------------- Original message -------------- From: " Carl E.
