Mold Found In Lebanon School

July 9, 2008

LEBANON, Pa. -- More problems were discovered at a Lebanon County

school that was closed earlier this year due to flooding.

One classroom and one office room are now off limits after an

environmental hazards company discovered mold in them on Wednesday.

The discovery came after several teachers complained about a bad

smell in the Lebanon school building.

The 100-year-old building on Cumberland Avenue remains open, but

those two rooms on the ground floor are closed off until the mold

can be removed.

A school spokesman said students had only been in the classroom for

an hour or two on Wednesday. Before that, the room had not been used

for weeks.

No health problems have been reported, but parents were notified of

the situation. School administrator Sandy Strunk said the mold is

not a result of last winter's flooding. She said that contractors

have assured her that this is a separate incident, caused by the

high amount of rain this summer seeping through an exterior wall.

Earlier this year, the IU 13 school was closed for several weeks

after a water pipe burst, flooding the building.

Removal of the mold is under way. Special education, preschool and

adult education classes are taught in the building.
