Workers are removing black mold, laying new carpeting and hanging

fresh wallpaper at the Legislative Office Building.

" If allowed to continue or allowed to sit, it would have presented a

hazardous workplace environment, " said Rep. Dan Eaton, a Stoddard

Democrat.

State lawmakers do much of their work at the office building, which

is closed this month for scheduled renovations. Mold removal

recently finished for the building's second floor, and work

continues on the third and fourth floors. The removal cost less than

$2,500, said Mike Connor, director of plant and property management

for the state Department of Administrative Services.

Most of the mold was found in the Finance Committee rooms - 210 and

211, said Eaton, who is involved in the renovations.

Mold was uncovered in House Finance Committee Chairwoman Marjorie

's office and in a committee room, where mold was found beneath

peeling wallpaper.

Connor said the mold spots were about the size of the bottom of a

soda can.

The building is on track to open Aug. 1.

" We are on schedule and under budget, " Connor said. The new

carpeting and wallpaper cost less than expected.

Connor doesn't expect leftover money to sit untouched. The $316,000

appropriated for improvements at the State House complex will be

tapped for other fixes, including roof repairs and renovations to

the State House cafeteria.

you would think they would have repaired the roof first. But of course

the legislative offices are fixed but the guy from the health

department in the flood zone acts like mold is no big deal.

Amazing.
