Mold Discovery Halts Start Of LJ Aleman

KLFY - Lafayette,LA*

School started Friday for Iberia, Saint and Lafayette parishes,

but at LJ Alleman Middle in Lafayette, that first day will come

Monday for fifth and sixth graders. This after officials found mold

in the campus walls. Officials say the situation is under control

but reports coming into TV 10 are contradicting those claims.

We first told you about the mold situation Thursday, but now it

seems there's more to it. Take a look at these pictures a teacher

with the school emailed to us.

You can see mold along the ceilings, walls and doorways of rooms in

the building. The teacher who does not want to be identified, says

the mold in these pictures date back about a year.

This goes against what school officials told us.

Officials claim they spotted mold in the walls of the fifth and

sixth grade wings a couple of weeks ago.

We went to the school Friday to find out what parents think about

the recent news of the presence of mold in their children's school.

One parent we spoke with said that a couple of weeks ago they were

made aware they were having roof or leaking problems in some of the

walls.

That's how long ago the Lafayette Parish school system said they

found Mold at LJ Alleman Middle School, a couple of weeks. But a

teacher with the school, who asks to remain anonymous, says the mold

has been a problem at the school for at least a year.

With the recent mold sightings both students and parents are still

skeptical about how healthy their school is.

School officials say they've been working for weeks to clean up the

infected wing and the class rooms will be safe for those fifth and

sixth grade students come Monday.
