Thanks for sharing this. I've pretty much given up on trying to figure out whose crystal ball is the most accurate. So many competing interests, so many different slants on the issue... sigh. Guest guest
My para pro/teacher assistant friends are worried about this change. Word on the street schools will try and dump Aspie/PDD-NOS off of IEPs. That means, the two that work with Aspies kids will get shunted somewhere else or layed off. One of the articles had a psychiatrist said some thing to the effect that the Aspie socialization problems can be " rediagnosed " as Anxiety-NOS, Genral Anxiety Disorder or Social Anxiety Disorder. If I were a parent, I'd have chest pains right about now. It moves your child from a developmental disability to a mental health issue. There is a federal mandate for autism support, nothing for mental health. Jay's diagnosis of Autism (Asperger) means the company must take him back under the ADA with the accommodations. It is the same as being blind or any other developmental disability. If you have a mental illness (which is what was Jay originally diagnosed with) , the ADA is worthless, and companies know this. There is no parity regarding physical vs mental health in the US. We are really trying to get him back to work before this change.
