Sorry to hear about your little guy having Hashi's; I don't know if I can be much help with any possible treatments and how doctors would medicate a child that young. I am a male who was diagnosed with Hashi's when I was 19 yrs. old. I am now 40 and have lived a pretty normal life being troubled only at times with low thyroid levels and side effects from the medications (both synthroid and Levothyroxin). Having been on some form of thyroid medication now for over 20 years, I don't as of yet feel like I've been hindered from doing pretty much whatever I want. Hope that helps a little; your son should still be able to do whatever his heart desires in this life.

My 5 year old son was diagnosed with Hashimoto's on Wednesday. Does anyone out there have experience with young children and this type of hypothyroidism? I'm worried about my little guy and trying to gather information and learn how best to help him.

I could not find the original post so I am replying from the response. My daughter was 7 when they diagnosed her with Hashimotos, was quite nerve racking at first. She is now 13 and we have settled into a pattern , we do not go to a specialist, her pediatrician takes very good care of her . The number one thing is to find a doctor that listens to you and your son. We used to drive to Birmingham and see a specialist and she was like " take some labs and send you on your way " Our pediatrician gives us the labs in our hand every time, this was something I wanted. We now have them checked every 6 months, with the understanding that if I feel like she needs it sooner I can call and get labs done. My clues for my daughter are , weight gain, dry skin, tummy aches and anxiety and not being able to focus.. Whenever any of these seem to increase I call. We have been fortunate so far. The fact that you have a diagnosis tells me someone did what they were suppose too. Took me almost 2 years to convince a pediatrician something was terribly wrong. This was a military installation at first and I had to get really ugly and change doctors like 3 times, constipation was one of the first clues. The thing is ..read as much as you want..but bottom line you and your son will do best learning what works for him..keep track of his levels make note of how he responds..my daughter is of course older now and can tell me how she feels. We have not had any problems with growth, we have had some issues with food tolerance..seems to not do so good with alot of processed foods. I changed the pool water to salt because I read somewhere that chemicals have some influence on your thyroid....Hope this helpsFirst don't panic you have a diagnosis..everyone is different in how they respond to meds my daughter takes Synthroid..Really nothing you request should be meet with any kind of resistance from your doctor..that is key to having a good communication, some of the other posters can probably help you with books and links to websites.Donna From: Thyroiditis [mailto:Thyroiditis ] On Behalf Of jeffery mccrawSent: Friday, April 27, 2012 10:20 AMTo: Thyroiditis Subject: Re: 5 Year Old With Hashimoto's Sorry to hear about your little guy having Hashi's; I don't know if I can be much help with any possible treatments and how doctors would medicate a child that young. Thank you everyone for your feedback. It is very scary for me. There is a lot to

learn and I want him to be healthy and live a normal life. It's nice to be able

to reach out to this group. Anyone found anything that helps slow the bodies

autoimmune response?

His numbers are below:

TSH Reflex: 98.90 (normal for him is 0.34-4.83)

Free T4: 0.57

Thyroglobulin antibody: 90.6

Thyroid Peroxidase: 384.0

There are a lot of people who recommend going gluten free. I have mixed feelings about it, but it’s one of those things that is essentially harmless (albeit tricky) to try. Harmless because, all you have done is remove all things containing wheat, rye, and barley gluten from his diet. If it doesn’t work, you can add them back. However, it’s tricky because you have to remove all things containing wheat, rye and barley gluten, and that stuff is EVERYWHERE. It’s not just breads, gluten is also used as a thickener in commercial soups and sauces, it’s used in vegetarian stuff as a texturizer, and in drugs as a filler. Plus, a lot of foods that kids like have gluten. So it can be a hassle, especially if it turns out it doesn’t work.
