Guest guest
Another IEP come and gone! For any parents out there, who haven't been thru one yet-- don't let them seem daunting! The teacher, etc, does all the work! And hopefully, you have a good one, who has been really thoughtful about the goals, so they are easy to agree with! ha. Having moved from California, to Utah just over a year ago--- I'm SOOOOO much happier with the school system here! And there are so many more opportunities in the coming years here. Nothing will be changing with his placement- right now, he has to be in the self contained class for all of his core subjects....but he does mainstream for PE...and for Seminary (a religion class). So he's getting daily interaction with the students, etc. The teacher told me all about the coming years- the transitional classes that start in 11th grade....job training, life skills, etc. The kids actually get jobs, like................they set up a muffin/cookie stand sometimes, and they have to learn about inventory, and counting back change to people, etc. They also do all the shredding for the whole school district.....they learn to weigh the papers, how to shred it...how to keep the proper records. Sounds like good experiences! OH...and that even if he graduates at the end of senior year---------------- he can continue coming to school, either a standard school day, or a modified schedule----- until he's 22! I think that's great to have that option....I have worried about the " loss " of skills etc...when school end.s We also talked a bit about GUARDIANSHIP. For any parents who don't know- because, I didn't until a few years ago-- you will most likely have to get a lawyer, and go to court before your child's 18th birthday- to become their legal guardian. Otherwise, at 18- they become their own--- and you would not be allowed to do anything without their permission..............no doctors, no job, no programs, no medication....................nothing like that. So if they don't have a really good comprehension of those things, they need a guardian. I found out that here..............not only do we have to have a lawyer for US- but we have to get a lawyer! UUGH.. 2 lawyers?!?!? and it has to be done BEFORE he's 18- so that will creep up on us pretty quickly I imagine. Honestly- it gripes me........................that I have to go to court- and ask PERMISSION to do what I've been doing his whole life.................AND to have to PAY for that!! hmph! That's it from this corner, Angel **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home.
