Guest guest
> We have since done some reading and he's taken online tests, and, while not conclusive, he feels pretty certain that he fits the bill. It's is part relief and part depressing. He keeps calling himself the Village Idiot and I keep emphasizing his genius qualities which are truly a gift. We watched the movie Adam and he was depressed for days. Carla, something to let your husband think about ... further proof he is not an idiot. Many Aspies can't learn compensatory strategies for getting along in the NT world, not without a teacher and a lot of help. He taught himself -- how can one be an idiot and learn something like that? I'm Aspie, and also taught myself -- well enough that very few people even realize I'm Aspie. [My childhood is textbook Asper-girl, and trained professionals spot it. My AS also affects my intimate life -- but to most of my friends and acquaintances, it's a surprise.] My younger brother taught himself to the PhD level -- he doesn't even see the AS in himself. [i do ... I remember his stimming as a little kid, and the teenage talks we had on social communication.] I'm fairly smart, but I think for much of my life, my brain power was spent in learning to function in a NT world. The same is probably true of your husband .... he uses his genius qualities to look normal. Give him time to accept himself, and the luxury to take his mask off at home. --Liz AS ex-wife of AS + mentally ill man
