Mooers Elementary school in Mooers, NY closed Tuesday after mold was

found in the building.

Superintendent told concerned parents that water leaked

into kindergarten classrooms this summer while construction was

being done on the school. Mold and a musty smell are believed to be

the result of rugs in those rooms getting wet.

" My children did come home the other night and said that it really

did smell bad in that wing, " said Steinfeld, a parent of

two.

Class is back in session at the elementary school Wednesday, but

students will not be allowed in the affected wing. Students from

five classes normally in the wing will be relocated to other rooms

in the building.

Kindergarten and second graders will remain in the school, while

approximately 60 first grade student will be in another building.

The first grade students will take the bus to Mooers Elementary as

usual, they will then be shuttled back and forth down the street to

St. ph's Parish.

" I think they are going above and beyond what they need to do. I

think it's an issue but I think it's a minor issue and I think they

are taking care of it, " said Sandy Gonyea, whose grandson attends

the school.

Steinfeld who has two children attending the school said she

also likes the way the situation is being handled.

" I feel very confident that they have the best interest of the

children at heart, " said Steinfeld

Some parents at the meeting still had concerns for their children's

health.

" I would encourage them to stop by and see the building and talk to

Mr. Rasco and voice their concerns to him, " said Superintendent

The moldy wing will be sealed off and fans will be brought in to

help with ventilation. The rugs are going to be replaced, and

asbestos tile underneath will also be removed in
