Guest guest
Been there, done that! I have 3 herniated disks in my neck, c3, c4,c5. I just knew when all my problems started that it was from a car accident I had when I was 18 yrs old. I got hit by a drunk driver and he broke c2, but the dr couldnt' fix it or he would paralyze me from the neck down. Well, it has healed, although it still sits sideways and now the 3 below it are pretty significant in the bulging area. Went to the dr yesterday (my 40th birthday) and we had a long discussion of my pain. He put me on Lyrica for my nerve pain and changed my other pain med to Ultram. He said if the Ultram isn't enough we will go with a pain patch. I can't take oxycodone or hydrocodone as they both make me really sick tgo my stomach. Anyway, he wants me to go back to Neuro and have a spinal tap to find out of this is MS as this is what my orthopod keeps thinking due to how my flares happen and how they come in cycles. I'm scared to have a spinal as last time I had a mylegram I ended up with a spinal headache for 10 days that made me deathly ill. Also, if this is MS (or fibro or lupus) then it will often times start a flare.........like I want to do one dang thing to bring me MORE pain!!! He also suggested I go to the Mayo clinic for a complete work up, but we will see. I told him I really don't give a rats hiney what is causing the pain, I just want a way to control it so that I can resume my life. He said, yes we can control the pain, but we have to find the cause so we can treat the disease and keep me from flaring and getting so far down in a flare as they really seem to kick my rump! I've just spent 3 weeks not being able to use my left are as the ulnar nerve was severely inflamed. Not one thing I was taking (amitriptiline, methlyprednesone, tylenol 3, muscle relaxers, and Celebrex) even came close to stopping the pain. It would take the edge off, so that I could rest a little but most of the time, it would get so bad, I'd just sit with tears running down my face. I've got a high tolerance for pain, but after the first 10 days, I was done, I just couldn't take it much longer!! Poor dr yesterday, I ended up crying (he'd never seen me do that) as I am just so frustrated as this affects every single aspect of my life, my husband, my kids, my business. I should be at the best time of my life, but no, I " m like some dang old lady who can barely get around!! Sorry, didn't mean to vent, better sign off for now! Guest guest
HI, I have had neck pain for a long time and finally talked to my rheumie He also sent me to physical therpy. But he also sent me to a neck and spine specalist who told me that I have a lot of instability in my neck and that I should not do the therpy because it could hurt things more. Make sure you do some checking and find the best treatment for you. Hope you can hold your head up today. By for now. I was under the impression that there was little that they could do. I really haven't followed up on the cervical spine issue with my Rhuemy. Guest guest
Hi . I do not yet have a diagnosis on what type of arthritis I have, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I can 100% empathize with you and your neck/disc issues. I have had 2 neck surgeries at the C5/6 level and I am still having an extreme amount of pain. I am currently in pain management and I had my second of 3 steroid epidurals today. I can't say anything is helping, but I'm trying everything to avoid another surgery. One thing does concern me though and that is your " rheumy " told you you had a herniated disc. Without an MRI (and maybe you had one?) it's impossible to tell if your discs are herniated and if so, to what extent. I've had 3 MRIs in the last 6 months and I have 1 herniated disc which is compressing my nerve. Additionally I have 3 more irritated nerves in my neck (from ultrasound and xrays). Be very careful with physical therapy because if your neck is unstable they can really, REALLY hurt you. I blindly went into PT the very 1st time I had problems and ended up in the ER and had to have emergency surgery. The surgeon told me I should NEVER have gone to PT without having a consultation first because PT ended up rupturing the disc more causing permanent nerve damage in my hand. With all that said, I hope you find out what works for you to help with the pain. Just please be careful! [ ] neck pain anybody out there have a nerve entrapment related to their RA. Guest guest
I do, also. In fact, neck pain that started 10 years ago started my downhill slide into RA. I also have herniated disks in the cervical spine and significant bone mineral loss in my neck (osteoporosis). And I agree with whoever it was that said DON'T just blindly go into PT. Make sure they know exactly what your problem is or they will make it much worse. Take care, another > > " anybody out there have a nerve entrapment related to their RA. Guest guest
Hi everyone, Thanks for your responses, And to ; No I didn't have the MRI yet but based on my symptoms and sudden onset the rheumie said it is a classic C5 C6 impingement. I go tomorrow to the Physical medicine and rehab doc before starting any actual PT. I do trust these guys and don't think they would steer me wrong. I am a physician Assistant and have worked with both of them at my hospital for years before I became their patient. So far the RA had been under good control and I had been able to keep working full time untill this neck thing this week. Hopefully this will improve quickly! Thanks again PS. He did say he will order an MRI if 2 weeks of " gentle " PT doesn't help. > > Hi . I do not yet have a diagnosis on what type of arthritis I have, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone. Would like to make a couple of hopefully helpful suggestions, but although I am recently retired doc, of course I am not giving direct medical advice, and would strongly suggest you contact your own physician if symptoms dont settle promptly. My thoughts are 1: neck pain could be directly related to your recent virus. This can be quite common with some GI viruses, even without the RA.Advice re seeing doc would be doubly important if this pain on movement worsens 2 Neck pain could be from RA, which quite commonly involves the cervical spine. Ditto re advice for 1 3 Could it be related to any ongoing RA treatment you are having? Will be out for next few hours so wont be able to add until later. Guest guest
, Thanks for the suggestions about my neck pain. As far as treatments for RA, I've been on the same meds for years now. I take Plaquenil, Celebrex, MTX, and Folic Acid and glucosamine. I've been on MTX and Folic Acid for about 2 years now. The other meds for about 7 years. If I'm not better by tomorrow, I think I will try to see my family doctor. It would take a couple of months to get a appointment with my RA doctor, plus a 45 minute drive one way and gas is so high right now. I'm already on a antibiotic because of a infected tooth that will require a root canal to save it. Don't they usually put you on a antibiotic for a GI virus anyway. Guest guest
Yes, the neck pain is almost gone now. It mainly hurts when I have to turn my head to back my truck down the driveway. Since the reverse gear is coming out of my truck I have to let it roll down the driveway into the carport instead of backing it out of the carport until I can afford to get the transmission fixed. But I still have nausea everyday off and on. If I don't have nausea and I eat something I get nausea every time. I've had this (whatever it is) for 11 days now and I've lost 13 pounds from not eating. I haven't actually had to throw up but it's been very close. I am anemic and my arthritis doctor told me that it was probably what was causing me to have shortness of breath. My doctor did a blood test to check for complications of anemia. She was supposed to call me with the results on Friday but didn't call until yesterday. Before she said that she didn't know what was wrong with me. Yesterday she said it was probably a viral infection. She wants me to go on a clear diet for a few days. What exactly is that anyway? I think it means clear broth and jello. Is there anything else I can eat? I probably can't eat saltine crackers either. Sometimes I feel shaky too. Taking my meds on a empty stomach only makes the nausea worse. I am on a iron prescription for the anemia. I had to work all weekend. It was hard but I made it. The shortness of breath was really bad on Sunday night. Do you think it could be food poisoning? I ate a sandwich for breakfast from Mc's two hours before I got sick. I think I've told you everything I can think of. If anyone can think of anything that could be causing my symptoms, please let me know. Thanks a lot. Pam angels mother <motherswithangels@...> wrote: Pam, How are you? Guest guest
Hi everyone... I'm wondering if anyone that has been exposed to Stachybotrys, Apergillus penicillium and or Cladisporim have experienced neck pain at the base of the skull? My 5 year old has been suffering from constant neck pain for over 4 weeks now. She's gone for x-rays twice now... " normal " . She is to see an orthopedic specialist on Wednesday. BUT I can't help but be suspicious of our mold exposure. TOO many coincidences. I can only hope it's some kid growing pain...but I have 6 children 2 that are older than my 5 year old, and have never had them complain of constant pain of anything for more that 3 days tops. Any advice or thoughts...or person experiences??? Thanks!!!!
Guest guest
fungal or bacteria menningitis maybe? csf pressure? possable inrercranial pressure? possable lung infection/inflammation. a mri might show more or a 3d cat scan maybe. with or without headackes. spinal taps for fungal are difficult, csf pressure is important because of menningitis can breakdown brain barriors. lung infections/inflammation can go into the spinal cord and or CNS. sont want to scare you but I would diffenitly get it checked out. hope everythings ok. if it comes and goes testing of pressure may not show inless it's done while it's happening, ask alot of questions about fungal and bacterial testing with csf, there may be new better ways available. less invasive testing for lung infection or inflammmation might be best first step. this is what I relate this pain with. look for head and neck/spinal doc. > > Hi everyone... Guest guest
I think that many doctors treating mold - sickened people have mentioned that they have noticed that, in a mold situation, (some? all?) steroids and the like can unwittingly trigger or worsten hypersensitization.. (something that most of us have that unsensitized people really want to avoid..because it makes your life miserable.) I am pretty sure that Dr. Shoemaker says this - that with mold, steroids are like putting gasoline on a fire, or something like that.. in his (important) book, Mold Warriors. Most doctors don't understand mold, at all. Very few do. There was an issue (the MCS issue) of the EPA's EHP (Environmental Health Perspectives http://www.ehponline.org ) journal in the 90s that gave a really good overview of sensitization..and how it developed, from a number of different perspectives.. (for example, I think lays out her TILT hypothesis piece by piece.. I think in that issue..) What a difference a decade makes.. huh? A number of things, as I remember, can worsten sensitization.. (Perhaps drugs that treat SYMPTOMS of exposure don't treat the underlying toxic issue that is making your immune system respond so aggressively.. lulling you into a sense of false security - lulling you to stay when you really needed to go?) What are the triggers that turn people hypersensitive? This is a very important question. You should ask Dr. Shoemaker or someone of similar caliber who understands this better... Maybe someone knows of a good doctor in your area?
Guest guest
The neck pain I described is suffered by my 5 year old daughter. That being said, she has not complained of joint pain, just numbness in her left arm, left leg, and acute and sharp pain in her left eye. I just want to say....mold makes me want to cry. Or perhaps it's really not the mold, it's the lack of understanding that is associated with mold exposure. --- In , LiveSimply <quackadillian@...> wrote: > > I think that many doctors treating mold - sickened people have mentioned > that they have noticed that, in a mold situation, (some? all?) steroids and > the like can unwittingly trigger or worsten hypersensitization.. Guest guest
The neck pain and numbness needs to be evaluated by a doctor.. Make sure she sees a doctor, soon.. ASAP.. Please make the call now. Some other things that come to mind.. I know we all can't just move out of mold.. Often, we cant even see it but we have to try to get rid of the mold, safely, and in the meantime, are you doing your best to maximize fresh air? That means open windows 24/7. Many air conditioners get filthy and filled with mold..They need to be cleaned regularly.. Fans in windows are the best cheap way to keep a constant airflow from outside going through a home. (The best window fans are the ones that have a balanced ventilation mode, where you can run one as an intake and another as an exhaust in the same unit..that way you dont either depressurize or pressurize your space..) Have you seen doctor, and please try to also see an opthamologist and - if your primary doctor recommends it - a neurologist- Are you taking cholestyramine? Many people (24%) build up the low molecular weight mycotoxins in enterohepatic recirculation.. which means that a bad mold situation will kick them into hypersensitivity more quickly.. cholestyramine - which removes those toxins that build up in the bile and cause inflammation all over the body, helped me a lot.. Also, make sure that your home doesn't have problems with lead paint, etc. I would recommend testing the paint in the kitchen, bathroom, closets, etc.. also.. Guest guest
I'm sorry, I did not see that she is already in medical care.. The advice about the fresh air is important.. is it possible for you to buy a window fan that has a 'circulate' mode (one in, one out) and use it in your bedroom so that you get constant fresh air? If you must use a fan only blowing one way, try to put another fan in another room blowing the other way and make sure to run both at the same time.. Don't use exhaust fans without opening a window too at the same time.. Don't depressurize your home and draw mold into your rooms from inside the walls.. Where do you think the mold is.. please tell us a bit more about your situation.. When I get that serious back/neck pain I take d-l phenylalanine (an amino acid) or " DLPA " which relieves pain also.. I don't know if it will help.. but its worth trying. i.e. Your mileage may vary.. On Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 3:00 AM, healthyhayashis <amhayashi@...> wrote: > Hi everyone... Guest guest
Healthy, I've had pain in the same area and for a few months had serious vertigo. It all but vanished a couple of months after leaving our moldy home. Numerous tests like your daughter had showed all things were " normal " . The neurologist couldn't rule out mold, but had no experience to verify it. He also thought that it might have been structeral neck problems and recommended chiropractic. Chirorpactic was good, but didn't really help. The main thing that helped was being out of the environment. I'd be interested to hear how things go with your little girl. She is too young for this kind of health crisis. Wishing you well, Sam > Also, the neck pain is pin pointed to the base of her skull.
