Guest guest
Factors of Burden on Dementia Caregivers (Source: QIMR) - A recent study revealed that factors determining caregiver burden lay not in the severity of dementia in the patient, but instead in the caregivers' feelings about themselves. A team of British and Australian researchers report that a sense of role captivity - feeling trapped and being unable to pursue personal interests - is the greatest factor affecting caregiver burden. Other factors contributing to caregiver stress included adverse life events, such as the loss of friends, financial problems, and a lack of confidence to provide sufficient care. Dr. Corinne Lendon, Head of the Molecular Psychiatry Group at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research commented, " If we can equip caregivers with the skills, confidence and support that they need to fulfil their roles, then we can not only improve the well being of both parties, but also help reduce the burden on the health system.
