Guest guest
I have EDS, possible occult tethercord (waiting on the bladder test), and tonsil herniation of 1.9mm that is almost totally blocking the flow. I am in constant pain. I hate, I hate taking pain pills. I'm so scared that I'll become adicted or something. So I try not to take any, but that leads me to become a hermit. All I can do is lay down to alliveate my pain. When I have to get up to do something as simple as walk to the bathroom my pain goes up by 100xs. I have viodin that i take if I have to about one a day, but I would like to be a little more active then just being a hermit in my house. Do you suggest going to a pain doctor while I'm waiting for tethercord surgery? from Missouri
Guest guest
I fought the very idea of pain meds especially narcotics for so long... If you mentioned a pain management doctor to me I cringed... Then one morning I woke up and was suicidal from the pain... Going to a pain management doctor was the best thing I ever did, we went through all of my medications... He explained how drugs like vicodan are short acting so you are on a roller coaster so they really do more harm than good... Also that I was doing damage to my heart by letting my blood pressure skyrocket with no pain relief AND I was more exhausted always fighting the pain... I learned it was not a weakness for me to be on pain meds...for me to have fought it for so long was a miracle. I am very very sensitive to narcotics while others need a high dose for pain relief...also some of us have strange reactions to drugs...this is another reason for a pain managment doctor. (and I know how bad the EDS pain is I had a baby natural and a hysterectomy wiht just motrin for pain relief...so if I tell you I scream when my joints are out...it should put it in perspective) I will tell you and I know some others will disagree I stayed away from anything to do with any shots or anything into our spines...especially those of us with EDS..our dura is just too thin...it causes so many other problems and in some cases worse problems than you can imagine... I also stayed away from a pain pump because I know I need mris the rest of my life. We are strong, courageous, bright people AND chiari and EDS is what we battle and whatever tools we can get we will take. Guest guest
I fought the idea of pain meds, too. I fought the idea of anti depressants, too. When we were healthy and young, we didn't need those things and it was the healthy way for us to " see " pain killers, as narcotics we don't want, want to avoid. But when there is a true need for them, they are a God send. They help us have a semblance of normalcy or activity or, basically, a life. They do not take away the pain, but they take the edge off for a few hours at various times throughout the day, and we deserve that. Our body needs it! Never ending pain causes depression and suicidal thoughts and irritability. Our families are not very happy either, when someone they love is hurting so much. I have read several times that if someone is truly in pain, they will not become addicted. Now, you might become dependent, meaning you would have to wean off of a medication if you decided to quit because your brain has gotten used to having it. But it's funny to observe here that people in the most pain are the ones who most want to take less pain meds. That is a good thing, it keeps us from becoming addicted...we all want off of them!! But we'll take them alright if we are in so much pain that we are suffering needlessly. ONe way to think of it is, if you had a dog who was in a lot of chronic pain, and pain killers would take that pain away, would you give them to him? Would you relieve his pain? Would you think he deserves to have some relief? Well, isn't the same true for you? I'd vote yes, go to the pain mgmt doctors. They deal all day every day with people in chronic pain and they won't think you are an addict or abusing. They will help you to try different meds to see what med, or combo of meds, works best for you and your body. That's just my 2 cents Virginia -- In , " kadams362000 " wrote: > > I fought the very idea of pain meds especially narcotics for so > long... > > If you mentioned a pain management doctor to me I cringed... > > Then one morning I woke up and was suicidal from the pain... > > Going to a pain management doctor was the best thing I ever did, we > went through all of my medications... > > He explained how drugs like vicodan are short acting so you are on a > roller coaster so they really do more harm than good... > > Also that I was doing damage to my heart by letting my blood pressure > skyrocket with no pain relief AND I was more exhausted always > fighting the pain... > > I learned it was not a weakness for me to be on pain meds...for me to > have fought it for so long was a miracle. > > I am very very sensitive to narcotics while others need a high dose > for pain relief...also some of us have strange reactions to > drugs...this is another reason for a pain managment doctor. > > (and I know how bad the EDS pain is I had a baby natural and a > hysterectomy wiht just motrin for pain relief...so if I tell you I > scream when my joints are out...it should put it in perspective) > > I will tell you and I know some others will disagree I stayed away > from anything to do with any shots or anything into our > spines...especially those of us with EDS..our dura is just too > thin...it causes so many other problems and in some cases worse > problems than you can imagine... > > I also stayed away from a pain pump because I know I need mris the > rest of my life. > > We are strong, courageous, bright people AND chiari and EDS is what > we battle and whatever tools we can get we will take. > > Kathy > trifecta-all surgeries > multiple other conditions > > > > > > I have EDS, possible occult tethercord (waiting on the bladder > test), > > and tonsil herniation of 1.9mm that is almost totally blocking the > > flow.
