At age 1- year, Ricky underwent a VERY successful ASD/VSD repair and has not stopped running since! he is a very high-energy, high-functioning young man. Due to a highly rigid school district, Ricky is currently non-verbal but is beginning to speak and we hope that with some intensive speech and language therapies, Ricky will soon be able to communicate his wants/needs effectively. Guest guest
I love it that our family continues to grow! I always wanted a large family and now I have over 600 in my family! What a great and wonderful thing to know! Kristy wrote: Welcome. :0))) WOW...Kristy, this is starting to be an everyday occurence, huh? > > Hi Everyone! > We have a new family joining us today! Guest guest
Hello , Tell us more about Ricky - how old is he now? My daughter, , was (mostly) non-verbal until 2nd grade - she has maybe 10 words in Kindergarten, maybe 20 in first grade but blossomed in 2nd grade. However because school is so verbal based she is 2 years behind - how do you test a non-verbal child if she knows the ABCs?!?! Numbers?!?! Addition? and EVERYTHING! I am know teaching her (myself) reading and math - she will be entering third grade at a K level in Math and a 1st grade level in reading - but we are working FAST - she already knows 20 of the 30 first grade sight words and will have the last 10 by Christmas. Then we move on to 2nd grade and by 4th grade she should be grade level (if she keeps up the pace and does not dig in her heels and become obstinate, gets that trait from her mom ;-) is 9 and starting 3rd grade, I am a substitute teacher in the school and on the PTA and going for my certification so I am there most days if not every day. I am in their face and I try to be as nice and helpful as possible so the school sees things my way ;-) But you better not cross me when it comes to my children's future. Do you have other kids? I feel the reason did not talk is never stopped talking. Darlene - mom to (11) and (9) > Hi Everyone! > We have a new family joining us today! Guest guest
Hello All, Ricky is currently five-years-old. We are moving from CA to TX in a few weeks where he will finally have a back yard in which to frolic. His most recent assessments from the " rigid " district I spoke of evaluated him just 3 months ago and most of the assessments were noted to be at levels below what the test could measure. I have no idea why they chose this particular group of tests, but I know nothing more than I did prior to putting him through all that. His routine was disrupted and he reacted so poorly. He is doing much better now that he is not being poked and prodded any more. Ricky has one older sister, a, who loves him dearly. a will be twelve this September. She talks to Ricky nonstop! Lately, they have been singing. a sings the words and Ricky makes some of the most adorable semblances of words. His favorite song right now is " Na na na na, hey hey hey, good bye....daddy " . On certain days, especially when he is VERY sleepy, Ricky will sing his ABC's. Other days, he counts to 11. Since I know what I am hearing but most others don't, assessments are essentially without merit right now. Soon I hope he will be my chatty Little Man whose words we actually understand. I truly hope Ricky is able to level out later on like it seems is doing. From what I have gathered from our new school district, the special needs of students are met with minimal resistance and with the support of faculty. I keep my fingers crossed as my recent experience brought us almost to filing for Due Process (until we made the decision to relocate). OK, one other goal I have for Ricky: to surpass 32lbs in weight. We have been buying the same sized clothing, shoes and suspenders to hold up his 2T's, for over 2 years now. 33lbs is looking mighty good! I am so happy to have found this group. Thank you all for the very warm welcome. Mom to Ricky 5 MDS and a 11 Re: Welcome and Ricky! Hello , Tell us more about Ricky - how old is he now? As for Ricky's weight....When was the last time that he had his thyroid tested? Kristy Laughlin wrote: Hello All, Ricky is currently five-years-old. Guest guest
We are moving to Cypress, TX. Once we are there, I will be having a full evaluation of Ricky's health done. His thyroid was OK as of January this year, which surprised me, actually. I think it is possible that his extra testosterone (XYY syndrome) is what keeps him so active and thus, so extremely slender. What weight he does have is solid muscle. He literally never stops moving (even in his sleep), but I bet that is no surprise to anyone in this group. Re: Welcome and Ricky! Guest guest
Are you moving to the Cypress by Dallas or Houston? We have others here with the XYY (or other varieties of the X and Y) I always wonder about thyroid because when my Tim was young, he grew very slow and actually stopped growing for 3 full years. When he was 10 he wore a size 4T in clothes! When we discovered the thyriod problem and got him on meds everything was fine. However, they hesitated on putting him on meds because they said he was boarderline normal on the low side. Someone told me once that those with Ds had a different level for thyroid and they said that what was normal for someone w/o Ds would not be normal for those w/Ds. However, I never had a doctor confirm that and it was a nurse who told me that. Kristy Laughlin wrote: We are moving to Cypress, TX. Guest guest
We are moving to the Cypress by Houston. I will be sure to ask his new doctors about different Thyroid levels in Ds children. If he is naturally a tiny boy, then fine. If I can do something to correct a problem and save him some troubles, I would surely like to do that. Once I have an explaination, I will be sure to give an update. Re: Welcome and Ricky! Hello , Tell us more about Ricky - how old is he now?
