Guest guest
Thrift shops are I realize now an unmitigated disaster. They smell musty as soon as I walk in. I went to my old favorite three on seventeenth today. I used to get a lot of stuff there. Now that I'm more aware of mold and mustiness, I realize as soon as I walk in I feel slightly unwell and I can smell the mustiness. Old clothes stored in people's attics and basements, old furniture, old upholstery, old rugs. MY GOD what could be worse!?!?! Then my nose adjusts. I feel like an idiot (the way Joe felt like an idiot about getting a new tv), as I bought a used, silk-lined, denim jacket for $30 and got home and figured washing it a few times in my Eco Egg on hot would get rid of whatever mustiness. But when I got home I could smell the mustiness much more than in the shop where I couldn't smell it at all after a few minutes. Moreover, after a few washings on hot it still had an annoying smell. I did not really feel I was 'reacting' but I just don't want it around me anyway and who knows if I'm actually reacting. And of course, my Eco Egg smells of it now so I'm running a vinegar wash and then I think I will run a bleach and water wash. I wonder how long it takes me to really understand how things work? I'm extremely annoyed at myself. Really. You'd think I'd have learned by now but I have to keep testing the same waters. The fact is, I can get new cotton clothes, and whatever the chemicals, after several washings they're fine. THAT STUFF washes out, more than MOLD! Mold is like fabric softener. It sticks and sticks and sticks.
