Guest guest
FEMA claims some Ineligible KATC 3 Lafayette* Posted: Oct 10, 2008 http://www.katc.com/global/story.asp?s=9158393 A Breaux Bridge homeowner is forced to move back into her mold infested home more than a month after Hurricane Gustav hit. Jeanie Crosby, said " I'm scared... It's difficult, extremely. " 61 year old Jeanie Crosby and her niece have been living in the red roof inn motel since hurricane Gustav struck in early September... But come Friday morning they'll have to pack up and move back to their home...still damaged. Jeanie Crosby said, " We can't afford to stay here anymore " A room in Crosby's house that suffered the most damage during Gustav has tiles are on the floor and the ceiling is covered in mold. Crosby says she applied for assistance through fema but the process has been a storm of itself. A week after hurricane Gustav. Crosby says an inspector came to her house. Jeanie Crosby said, " He took one picture and said well half of it's livable. " The very next day two more men came out to inspect. Jeanie Crosby said, " You've got the worst mold there is. You can't live in here. " Nothing positive from either inspector so she was surprised to hear the inspector ruled it. " ineligible " A FEMA representative said in some cases residents will be denied if an inspector believes the house was not kept up. Whether that is or isn't the cause of assistance rejection in Crosby's case she still has no place to go but home to her mold infested house. Last week Crosby applied for an appeal after getting estimates from two contractors. They say it will cost close to twenty thousand dollars to repair her home. She's still waiting for FEMA's response...
