Guest guest
This is somewhat difficult to answer because of misunderstandings about mold, mold odor and the odor of antique wood and its finishes. Mold spores don't " come out " of the wood. They can grow on the surface, which means they can be cleaned off. Then the wood can be sealed with shellac or something else you don't react to. However, the " odor " is unknown. It may be from mycotoxins, which many on this group say, or the chemical interaction between the mycotoxins or enzymes with the antique finish. I don't know what it is but I do know I've rarely been successful sealing in the odor of antique wood. What I do know is it isn't mold spores or mold growth. Anybody have other advise or experience? Guest guest
From watching Antiques Roadshow, I'd say if you think you have an antique worth selling, I'd go ahead and sell it as is, since doing anything to it that wasn't done in the period of the piece can ruin it's value and let the new buyer decide what to do with it. The more original it is, even if it looks like sh#$% frankly I've learned preserves it's value. If you want to keep it for it's enjoyment and don't care about preserving it's value, then try the things you are talking about. I believe, Dean, member of group, is in business of restoring? I don't know if she restores wood antiques though but she may be able to answer your question. You can find her address in postings list. --- In , " Carl E. Guest guest
Thank you. They are family heirlooms and I would like to keep them if possible. > > > > This is somewhat difficult to answer because of > > misunderstandings about mold, mold odor and the odor of > > >

Guest guest
I wonder if you could store them somewhere for long period of time. Mycotoxins decompose after awhile I believe...someone correct me, if wrong, please. > > The antiques are from my home.
