Hi ,

Someone mentioned this to me a few months ago -- I had never heard this theory

before, so I did some digging and this is what I found.

Here is a study that was done in 1993 -- http://www.efsumb.org/litrev1a.htm

Please note that " the results from the present study should be viewed

cautiously. The authors do not refer either to the indication for the original

ultrasound exposure, nor is there any information about the duration or type of

ultrasound examination. It is possible that the results found could reflect a

greater clinical concern for disorders that can cause delayed speech in the

exposed group than in the control group. "

About sonograms/ultrasounds. I've never heard about a link between

them and autism or apraxia or ADHD (or whatever) and am wondering if

anyone has heard anything to link them. It's just a crazy

idea...based on nothing, really, other than skyrocketing rates of

childhood disorders at the same time that these procedures are

becoming routine (last few decades). I'm thinking that possibly they

could affect the senses of the fetus and cause some problems--since

so many children seem to have sensory integration disorder. Not

scientific, I know, but plausible, I guess. I'm not suggesting that

they are linked (lots of things have increased in the last few

decades and i'm sure they're not all causing problems)...just

questioning to see if anyone knows anything about this subject.

Funny you should mention this. I have always wondered about this. is the

only one of my 4 children that I had a ultrasound done with. Early in the

pregnacy I had one done, at that time they could not see what I wanted to know,

the sex!! I found out about a school in my area that was looking for models & I

went there to be a model. LOL! Funny they called it that when you look more

like a, hmmm beached whale. Anyways I signed my life away and four students

each found out that there was a boy in that round belly. Along with all the

other things they measure and look for. Of course I always wonder about all the

things that went wrong with his pregnacy, early labor, medication, poor diet,

sick to him being born early. He was also very jaundiced for weeks in the

beginning & kept losing weight until he was about a month old??? So for me

there will always be the, I wonder??? Not that I am trying to blame anyone like

some might take this for, just wondering if any of these things might have

contributed to the cause. But I no longer focus much on these things since

is doing so well these days. A year ago it was a different story, nonverbal,

today 5 - 6 word sentences. We all just keep moving on looking back only to

help another parent where we were at one time!! Best wishes to all on this list

as we head into the holiday season & give thanks. For some the are thanks that

are endless!!!

Kris,

I am praying for you. I was where you are now about 5 yrs. ago. I wish I

could say there was some easy solution. Over time we were able to change our

job situation which took care of a lot of problems(easier said than done).

We ended up changing jobs and careers more than once to make life with our

kids a little easier. We definitely had to put luxuries like cars with

AC/heat, new carpet(we had just concrete on one floor for 10 years) for

awhile. At first it was even harder than before, but eventually it has paid

off.

Being tired used to really hurt my perspective on our situation with 4 kids

and 3 with diagnoses. A sense of humor--sometimes hard to find--really

helps. Finding a church with good support for our family was very

difficult, but it helped as well. Ignoring people who didn't understand is

difficult, but necessary--they don't really know what you are going through.

Hang in there.

We went to Hanger - In Northridge - though I think they are moving or have moved to Encino.

There are several providers in the LA area that I know of -

Hanger in the Valley and Downtown,

Beverly Hills P & O (starband) and

CT in Burbank - though I think they are only seeing patients on Saturdays and I am not sure if they are accepting new patients.

The only thing we used was rubbing alcohol (both the 70% and the

91%). However, some people say to have hydracortizone cream and

Aquaphor on hand. Some also say a good smelling shampoo (we like J &

J's Soothing Naturals and the Lavendar Night time). I can't think of

anything else but hopefully others have their input too.

Good luck.

Hi everyone...

I seem to have caught a cold. Since our mold exposure, everytime I

catch a cold, my body aches, neck gets stiff, mucous is (ok this is

nasty) bloody and brown, headachey and the worst sore throat. This is

the 3rd cold I've had since July 1st 2008. Do any of you experience

such severity when you get sick since your exposure???

Thanks...

my son has been getting some types of help since we got the dx.we was even let in preschool alittle early.we had to fight with the school he was attending then.we had to get PACER involved.they helped us alot.his prechool teacher did not want to believe that he had autism.she continued to say that throughout the whole time he had her.which was 2 years.we had him tested at FRASER a known place to get kids dx'd here in minnesota.he has gotten alot of help over the years.he is on concerta and risperdal.a stranger would have no idea that he has autism.one time we were at walmart and he wanted pokemon cards and at that time i had no money,so i couldnt buy them and i told him that.he ended up having a major meltdown over it.he sat on the floor and was screaming and yelling.everyone was looking.i even had my youngest one with me too(i am a single mom)....two ladies ended up walking by us and they stopped and one bent down to him and said "why do you have to act this?you are a brat! you dont need to be acting like this." oooo i was SO mad.i wanted to so badly walk up to her and punch her or something....but i didnt.the other lady said "yeah really" and i screamed out "he has autism you moron!"he has grown up more since then.when that happened he was crying even more because the ladies called him a brat....Christie~Troy and

My son was 5 yrs old. The diagnosis can change. Originally we were told

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, OCD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder,

and PTSD. I stalled on seeing the psychiatrist for a bit and amped up

the interventions for his medical issues and talk therapy. His official

diagnosis ended up being Asperger's with recovering PTSD. He has

recovered from OCD, and no longer has GAD, either.

My son was 12yo, which is not unusual for AS. I think kids with

classic autism are usually dx'd as toddlers or even babies, as they

are more obvious with the speech delays.

If the school would have done child find like they are supposed to, he

would have been dx'd around age 9. It took me that long to figure out

what to do to get it figured out!

The first at 3 yo and the second we knew he had autism by age 15 months or so but did not get the official dx until age 3 as the doc wanted to wait until then. But it was just a formality since we knew already.

Our son was 12 when he was diagnosed. Also, if school would have

listened to me when I started noticing things when he was 7...! I am

glad we now have the answer, we received the official diagnoses last

year, he was 12 1/2. He feels better about himself too.

We live in the Netherlands and things are a little different here.

The school receives extra money to help him. He now meets with a

person (not sure if this is a psychologist) who is specialized in

autism. And his homeroom teacher spends extra time on him, to make

sure he understand his homework assigments.

Outside of school he is in a class on autisme. this will runs 12

meetings. It will start the end of the month. I have heard very good

things about it.

We have tried the diet, did see very good signs in the beginning but

after the summer vacation he quit. He needs to be motivated to get

back on the diet... hard at 13!

He did love reading the book by Luke . Very interesting and

for us as parents, very clear in explaining the Asperger Syndrom.

I feel blessed that is the way he is. He is a mild manored kid

with no major outbursts. Though he sometimes gets very frustrated,

esp now he is in puberty. But we have found ways to deal with that.

I do think that our middle son is the one that is paying for it.

Beacuse he is very smart and very cleaver, he will just do his thing,

needs no help... etc. Therefor we don't pay him enough attention...

Guess the guilt will always be there..
