Above is a link to a picture of ringworm of the head/scalp. Ringworm is

a fungus/fungal infection. Its gross so beware! Another good sign of

Lamisil as a strong anti fungal med below.

FRIDAY, Oct. 5 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration

has approved a new oral form of the Novartis drug Lamisil (terbinafine

hydrochloride) to treat people age 4 years and older with tinea capitis,

a contagious infection commonly called ringworm

<http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=12032> of

the scalp.

Most of the 3 million to 4 million people in the United States with the

condition are children under age 10, Novartis said in announcing the

approval. The newly approved Lamisil Oral Granules are meant to be taken

once daily for six weeks.

People with liver or kidney problems, and pregnant and nursing women,

shouldn't take the drug unless directed by a physician, Novartis said.

In addition, the company said Lamisil could interact with other

medications, including some popular antidepressants, beta-blockers, and

antiarrhythmics.

Lamisil Oral Granules are expected on U.S. pharmacy shelves starting in

January 2008, Novartis said.

[Medication Written by Pharmacists Reviewed by Doctors]

GENERIC NAME: terbinafine

BRAND NAME: Lamisil

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Terbinafine is an antifungal agent that is

taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Terbinafine acts by interfering

with the ability of fungi to make chemicals called sterols that are an

important part of the membrane that surrounds fungal cells and holds

them together. This weakens the cell membrane. Oral terbinafine is more

effective for treating fungal nail infections than griseofulvin

(Fulvicin; Gris-Peg) and itraconazole

(Sporanox), two other antifungal agents used for treating fungal nail

infections. Topical terbinafine was approved by the FDA in 1993.

Terbinafine oral tablets were approved in 1996.

Doctor's won't prescribe the pill form of fungal treatment as they

are worried about the risk to your liver.

Oh my...what an awful infection and the guy is obviously otherwise so

young and healthy looking. Anyway, whether doctor prescribes probably

depends on doctor as the doctor of a male friend of mine Rxed Lamisil

tablets for him even though he only had a toenail fungus. I encouraged

him to try the soaking feet in white vinegar because it seemed like

overkill for a toenail infection and he said he had a lot of success

with the vinegar but I don't know if it went away completely, didn't

ask him again.
