My current rental community has fireplaces in almost all units. When

I moved in late last winter it wasn't a problem, and I figured it

wouldn't become one with windows closed. Now, new nearby tenants seem

to be infatuated with having fireplaces and are burning wood every

night. The buildings are less than 100 ft. apart and our forced-air

heat unit sucks in the smokey air. It smells like a campground in the

apartment and there are 2 of us with asthma, etc. It is a serious

problem. The HVAC sits in a closet, elevated on a shelf about 2 ft.

above a space that has an open-to-the outside 4 " pipe to draw in

outside air. Another side of this space has a large cold air return

vent in the adjoining bedroom wall. So the furnace is drawing a

combination of return and outside air.

Any advice? Terminating the lease is a severe financial hardship.

Would it hurt the operation of the system if I blocked the outside air

intake to reduce the smokey air drawn into the apartment, and just let

it recycle the indoor air? Could it help to tape some filter material

over the open hole to the outside?
