Toxic mould found at a Wellington school poses no risk to pupils but

has compounded the school's financial problems.

The greenish black mould - known as stachybotrys - was found on the

walls of a block of Brooklyn School classrooms being renovated

during the holidays.

It grows in wet building materials and is commonly found in leaky

homes. Inhaling the spores can lead to a range of health problems.

Acting principal Felicity Bothamley said that asbestos removal

specialists had been hired and the mould had been removed. The block

was screened off while workers wearing respirators dealt with the

problem.

Ms Bothamley said parents had been told about the problem but did

not want to comment further.

Wellington Central MP n Hobbs said the pupils were safe.

" There's absolutely no health concern at all. The room had been

sealed, and health and safety had been in there. It's perfectly

safe. "

Occupational Safety and Health advises that people involved in

removing or cleaning mould-contaminated wallboards and other

materials use respirators to protect against inhaling airborne

spores.

The more pressing concern was that the Education Ministry would not

grant the school more money to cover an estimated $120,000 overrun

in additional costs.

Ms Hobbs had taken the school's case to Education Minister Chris

but had yet to receive a response.

Ministry regional manager Murray said the school was not

getting any extra money.

Schools were allocated capital funding for all property

work. " Brooklyn School has more than sufficient funds in its five-

year capital budget for the additional work which is necessary in

this case. "
