Can you privately e-mail the lab results to me which " did not

disclose enough information, but did confim it is mold in 'high

counts.' " I'm not sure I understand the contradictory conclusions.

From your description I'm not sure you even need mold testing. It

more likely fits the " filth " category of public health. The other

driving influence is the attitude of the landlord. If he/she is not

cooperative don't try to fight him. Just move.

Acceptability of contents can be very difficult, as many here can

testify. The lab results of contents commonly show " not high " or

even " zero " but you still react.

If you wipe window glass with paper towel and there is black on the

paper, this IS soot, NOT mold; either there is spillage of

combustion gases from the heating system (the soot is from incomplete

oil or gas combustion) or you have been burning jar candles.

Mold only grows on glass upstairs if there is dust on the glass and

condensation (usually at the frame and bottom, but not the center) or

on dusty glass in basements that are not dehumidified.

It only takes one jar candle to blacken an entire house with soot.

(Add a drop of bleach to the black, if it stays black it's soot.)

The mold in the attic is due to leakage of humid house air into the

attic. Under special circumstances, spores from attic mold can get

into the house, but in my experience, I have not found attic mold

spores in the house air, so exposure to attic mold spores is minimial

(unless you are up there disturbing the dust with the access open or

bringing items into the house with moldy dust on them).

If the black in the house is indeed soot, and most of the mold is in

the attic, I would not worry too much about your possessions. The

mold in attics, assuming no roof leaks, generally only grows on the

cold roof sheathing, not on stored goods).

NEVER burn jar candles and have the combustion equipmemnt checked:

water heater and boiler.

Do jar candles put out more soot than tapered candles?, or should

people just not burn candles at all. I have to burn candles when

lights go out for indeterminate periods which happens a couple days a

year due to location of house and way electric wires come back to where

I am, but otherwise I don't burn them, but have used tapered candles

for dinners.

Good to know how to test black powder for soot or mold. I had whole

attic full of soot but had it professionally cleaned because I didn't

know how to tell if their was mold up there or not since entire attic

space was covered with black dust.

Yes !!! When I wash any windows or glass it is jet black. Between that

and the black " soot " on the walls, that is what makes me worrried that

my beloings my be contaminated. The room where the " first mold spot "

was discovered (also the room with crawlspace hatch, with the black

powder mold) walls are the worse.

Althank you for your help
