Guest guest
Jill, I will defer to Jeff on the chemisty if he disagrees with any of the following. I suggest simply warm water and a mild detergent which you can tolerate. And air them out as much as possible. The purpose is to remove as much of the " stuff " as possible, regardless of " what it is. " " What it is " now includes the original sprores/mycotoxins/whatever plus the potassium permanganate plus the carrier (water? Mixed yourself or a commercial product?) plus the end result of all chemical reactions produced by the combinations of this " soup. " I would avoid ozone because it is an oxidizer similar to potassium permanganate. Why use the same thing to remove the same thing that didn't work? Definitely avoid the IAQM because of the hydrogen peroxide (same as the ozone, an oxidizer) and especially because of the quats (quaternary ammonium compounds). The fantasically good news is the reactions to the car have not generalized to other exposures like in the past - what calls Toxicant Induced Loss of Tolerance (TILT). Guest guest
Mycotoxins in your car? Maybe, maybe not. If you have been exposed significantly to elevated levels of mold, you have been sensitized. Your cars may have had mold in them before from natural sources, not necessarily cross contamination. How old are your cars, and where is the mold? The older the car, the more likely it is to have mold. If carpet has gotten wet, mold is very likely. It may need to be pulled up and dried. Perhaps a window or windshield leaks. Water coming in around the windshield can go down in front of the dashboard and wet the carpet. Old weather stripping around side windows can leak when it rains. If you always sit in the front seat, you may never notice a small leak. Weather stripping in the trunk may leak. Pull out the spare tire and see if there is water in the spare tire well or on the carpet in the trunk. A clogged AC drain line can leak water onto the carpet in front of the passenger seat. Even in winter, the AC is used to help defrost the windshield, and a little water can drip. If you find wet carpet, either remove it, or pull it loose and dry it thoroughly, and try spraying the carpet top and bottom with Lysol or similar disinfectant if you can tolerate it (sorry Carl, but it works for some people). You might need to drive with the windows open for a week or so for the odor to dissipate, and to reduce your risk of becoming sensitized to the disinfectant. Air conditioners can develop mold. Some car dealers are familiar with this and can treat the problem. Some cars have very good filters to prevent that problem. But the filters get old and need to be replaced. I react to my filter once it gets more than a year old. Look in the owner's manual for " cabin air filter " or " passenger compartment filter " . They are $20-30, plus installation, though you may be able to do it yourself. You can buy one at your dealer or NAPA. Once you are sensitized, mold levels can be far below the odor threshhold and still cause a problem. Examine things well, and you may solve your own problem. Guest guest
Re mycotoxins in my car Hi Gil Well, the thing is that I keep doing what I think are pretty objective tests. I can ride in friends' cars that are older and in much worse shape than mine (ours are 2002 and 2000 and in great condition because I have MCS so I took hyper-care). And the reason I feel things are getting cross contaminated is that I will get something from a friend that is FINE when I'm out of the house or in their car/house but then they take me home and I spend time either in my house or car and the clothes get contaminated. Or I wash them in my machine and dry them and they get contaminated. This is only a " cross contamination " but I'm acutely sensitive to these mycotoxins. Even if I clear for a bit then come back. WE're literally now getting rid of everything we own right now and desperately seeking a safe place for me to go (with MCS it's not easy, with a new baby it's even harder). I wish cleaning and airing out did something but we've been doing that for 6 weeks now to no avail. We have no money, husband is losing job in two weeks, but I don't think we have a choice at this point. I'm still open to suggestions, but having been through this before, I have little hope left. The neurotoxic headaches are doing me in...and no it isn't other stuff, for sure, it's just mycotoxins otherwise i'd feel these " other " things on other people, in stores, in other homes, etc, and i'm not -- let me rephrase that, I still have MCS sensitivities, but I'm not reacting to anything like the way I'm reacting to the mycotoxins. I HATE mold. ugh this is so awful. any help still appreciated! jill **************Inauguration '09: Get complete coverage from the nation's capital.(http://www.aol.com?ncid=emlcntaolcom00000027)
