Most women have what they refer to as their " signature scent, " the fragrance they've been spritzing their necks and wrists with for years. They, along with friends and family who can smell them coming, consider the scent all their own. But, it usually isn't. Not even close. When a perfume is produced, packaged then peddled at every major department store in the country, the term signature scent is about as realistic as celebrity fragrance designers stepping foot in perfumeries. As the founder of Ajne Rare & Precious, a custom blending perfumery in Carmel, Calif., she's been concocting couture fragrances for customers such as Reese Witherspoon, Kanye West and Swank for four years. Now, she brings Ajne Parfum Demi-Blend to the Spa at Four Seasons Las Vegas, making personalized perfumes a spa visit away for locals. " When I first opened, everyone wanted the custom-blended perfumes but they weren't dedicated to the length of time it took and the $1,500 cost, " she says. " Then I c ame up with the idea of preblended accords. " Every accord contains a blend of the finest and purest essential oils, which Hendler's partner and husband, Rex Rombach, searches high and low to find. Rose oils derive from Bulgaria and champaca oils hail from West India. Each one of Ajne's 200 plant-distilled essential oils is free of aroma-chemicals and phthalates, making them just as friendly to the environment as your sense of smell. Demi-Blends all start with a test of the chakras, which have become a focus of the spa industry in recent years. Each of the seven chakras represents a different energy center, ranging from communication to spiritual connectedness. Based on questionnaire answers, a mélanger -- a specialist trained in blending custom perfumes -- determines the weakness and strength of each chakra and which accords will aid in harmonizing them. From there, clients sniff out a process of elimination. The final few accords that remain make up the Demi-Blend unique to their needs and senses. " The pure essential oils in our formulations actually have a balancing effect on each chakra because I divided all my fragrances into chakra categories, " says Hendler. Bottles start at $200 for .5 oz of spray perfume. A black heart flacon dabber is $250 for .5 oz and 1 oz. of spray perfume is $300. But, perfumes aren't the only form the oils take.
