All plaster (i.e. " plaster of paris " ) uses lime. That is how it works.

Via a chemical reaction..

And yes, its resists mold far better than gypsum wallboard or

was-wood/fake wood.

Its available at every hardware store and very inexpensive.

Very nice to work with because of its shape-ability and fun to paint

or stain, too.

Don't use it in a bathroom where it regularly gets wet, though,

without the right kind of backing behind it.

I also would not use it on a floor or extensively in a home without

expert IAQ advice because I think it remains alkaline.. (although they

do do that in China and have for thousands of years)

Actually, that reminds me..the use of plaster and logs/wood and

joining without nails, are the core ancient Asian building techniques

that have given us the worlds oldest and still structurally sound

wooden buildings. (many of them are really beautiful..)

Plaster is semi porous and will absorb (and I think, also transmit)

humidity but it holds up fairly well even under humid conditions

strength-wise.

Not really Live. My whole house is plaster, including the bathrooms and

the bathrooms don't have any trouble. My main bathroom is the room in

the house that tests the best. I think it's because I have taken the

steps to caulk and seal all joints and wood framing so no leakage from

walls into bathroom. I did it to prevent moisture from bath or shower

from getting INTO walls, but it has apparently helped keep stuff from

old house INSIDE of walls too. Perhaps the key is you said 'without

the right backing to it' but you should use the right backing whether

you put it.
