Barb,

Candle flames produce soot because the flame structure is disturbed

and cooled (releasing unburned carbon) by air currents. So any candle

flame can " flicker " and produce soot.

The difference between a tapered candle and a jar candle is that in

quiescent air there is laminar (smooth) upward flow of air around a

tapered candle but turbulent flow (because the air flow has to change

direction) inside a jar candle.

People like jar candles because of the flickering light but the

cnadles produce a great deal more soot than tapered candles. In my

opinion, jar candles should not be used.

My house was just filled with tapered candles as a result of a power

failure so I am sympathetic. The less breeze, the less soot you get

but if you need the light, you need the candles.
