I have a friend who is learning to be a home inspector and he

emphatically says that

home inspectors are not " mold inspectors " .

I bet that Carl or Jeff might know somebody in the Chicago area who

could help you.

I would NOT just look in the phone book. That is like playing Russian

Roulette with a six shot revolver with five bullets in the magazine.

Another option is collecting dust from your house and running an ERMI

test on them.

If you are on a tight budget, that might give you more bang for your

buck. For example, three ERMI tests, basement, ground and secnd

floors, would cost under $750 and you could collect the dust yourself

using a brand new unused - thats important - cheap hand vac. ($25)

ERMI test analyzes dust for fungal DNA. (QPCR)

Spore tests of air are often woefully inaccurate.. They can and do

OFTEN give false negatives.. For that reason, they should never be

used to say a place is safe.. Just taking one test is even worse..

(usually many are done in a building)

What town do you live in?

I was also in a very simualr situation, and I found an AMAZING home

inspector. I live in Barrington, about 40 miles outside of Chicago. If

you can give me your town, I can ask him if he serves your area.

I can almost garentee that if you do indeed have a mold problem, this

inspctor will find it. He is VERY VERY reasble also (I called many. He

spent over 7 hours in my home during his inspection (and i was just a

renter)! and explained every last thing to me. I highly recomend him.

He is an honest man who loves his job and takes it very seriouly.

He gave me a 32 page report with pictures (not just of the mold :-)

He is also certified in Mold...the guy is just amazing. He can also

doing the " mold testing " (and his price for that is very good too)
