Guest guest
Yes, I was deficient in vitamin D also. I guess the significance is, that without adequate levels of vitamin D, you can't properly absorb calcium. With RA, we're already at greater risk for osteoporsis than most people, and if you take prednisone (I still do) the risk is even higher. It wasn't a big deal though... I just had to take a prescription strength mega-dose of vitamin D for a month, then she tested me again. My levels were up where they were supposed to be again, so now it will just get checked when all my other regularly scheduled bloodwork gets done. If it starts to drop again, she'll just have me take more again. --- In , " Darlene Ashcraft " <luvtoknit@...> wrote: > > My rheumy just called and said my labwork showed that I'm deficient in > vitamin D. Guest guest
You're so right Tess. We all need sunshine. Just 15 minutes a day is what's required to get the Vitamin D that we so desperately need. Penn State University is doing a clinical trial using Vitamin D to treat RA. The trial is in phase three and the final results will be out in December 2007. I'm very curious about the outcome. We live in a society where to many people are always inside. Our kids spend to much time indoors in front of tv's and video games. We've also become a society that is paranoid over sun exposure. I read a study that said since the evolution of sunscreens, skin cancer has increased. So much for it preventing skin cancer. I wonder if it contributes to skin cancer with the way we lather it all over ourselves and then go lay in the sun and bake it in. I have gotten in the habit of sitting in the sun for 15-30 minutes a day. I believe it also helps with depression as well as osteoporosis. a On May 4, 2006, at 7:36 PM, Grammi B wrote: > Hi...I have this problem, though probably caused for a different > reason. Guest guest
This is very interesting about the Vitamin D. One of the things that I have heard is that it works by the sunlight converting colesteral into the Vitamin D, thereby reducing colesteral levels. Does anyone know if that is true? It's cloudy here in Houston today, and between taking my Mtx last night, sleeping too long on a soft matress and the weather, I'm having an achey day, but am trying to push through it. Hope you guys are doing great. Betsy in Houston > > > Hi...I have this problem, though probably caused for a different > > reason. You can get loads of calcium through your diet and/or supplements but if you do not have enough Vit D the body cannot process the calcium. > > I see a lot of you all take vit D and the doctor is testing my vit d ....... > how is this related to RA or joint problems?? any links or advice?? > > > amber > > > > **************Planning your summer road trip? Guest guest
Vitamin D is necessary for our bodies to properly absorb calcium. Most of us need extra calcium to prevent osteoporsis and many of us are low on Vit D. Any med's in the steriod family also cause osteoporsis so the need for Ca & Vit D. Guest guest
The first time I tested vit/D deficient my Rheummy said that we all get D from the sun,and that most chronic pain sufferers don't spend as much time in the sun as healthy people. This could be part of the reason. Also v/D deficiency causes extreme fatigue. Guest guest
All this talk on Vitamin D is interesting and helpful. Even though I take a script form to support my calcium use, my doctor doesn't check my Vit D level. My pcp hasn't either. Do try to walk outside when the sun is out even when it's cold. Guest guest
Very interesting info on the Vit D scene. Per my ND, Vit D is an ANTIFUNGAL - very important to have strong Vit D levels if you want to detox mold. She even has told me to go to a tanning bed to up my Vit D in the winter! I know that sounds crazy, but NDs training tells them that if you eat a high saturated fat diet (which I do now) then exposure to tanning is a non-issue. Many people don't realized that they have issues with gluten and therefore the small intestine is damaged and doesn't allow for proper absorption of vitamins/minerals. All it takes is a simple blood test to see if you have issues with gluten. Please note that this all sounds rather ridiculous, but after 3 years of MDs who knew nothing about mold (obviously many do - but the ones I went to didn't and felt terribly that they couldn't help me) and being pumped up with meds that made me worse (singulair, inhalers, etc) and swollen like the michelin man- I found an incredible ND (licensed). She immediately put me on a gluten, sugar and dairy free organic regime, detoxed my thyroid, liver, etc via natural supplments and herbs, found a great applied kinisiologist chiropractor to support her methods - and amazingly, my thyroid went back to the NORMAL range with no synthroid within 6 or so months. While I don't feel like I did " BM " (Before Mold), I certainly feel TONS better than 3 years ago. My Vit D is in the normal range again, I've lost some weight (even when my thyroid #s were off the charts, I still " deflated " from the inflammation). Sadly, my ND moved to Washington state - as soon as she is settled in a practice there, I will be happy to share her info. (Please don't ask me for it now - i cannot give her name out yet - I did ask her already.) Meanwhile, for anyone interested in trying an ND, just google for one and see if you live in a state where they're licensed. BE WELL!
