Carolyn, if the glipizide (sulfonylurea) isn't working, maybe your pancreas

is pretty worn out. A C-peptide test should reveal how much pancreas

function you have remaining. If your pancreas isn't able to do much anymore,

you will have to rely upon injected insulin. It's probably a matter of

getting your dosing and timing right. How many grams of carbs a day do you

estimate you are eating? Can you tell us more about your insulin dosing

regimen?

Glad to hear you are still there, following the group postings!

To my dear precious Susie,

I was so very sorry to hear the news about your mother's passing. I have

been away since Thursday and just came home last night (Monday). I have an

older cousin (who some of you may have heard of) who is dying with cancer.

His name is Cliff Bruner and he has records in the sonian and is in

many cities in the County Music Hall of Fame. He is actually world famous

with his fiddle and played with many great bands during his life. My heart

is so bad that I will not be able to attend his funeral but I did get to go

visit him and tell him that I love him and bid him goodbye Sunday. In that

way I was blessed.

I was all prepared to give you this little " speech " that I have been giving

my grandchildren in preparation for what I know lies ahead for them. (Of

course, I wasn't able to " practice what I preach " and have been sitting

here crying my eyes out for you and your sisters.) I have told my

grandchildren that when I am gone I do not want them to mourn my death but

to celebrate my life. I've had a wonderful life and have made so many great

friends. I have truly been blessed. I realize that is is going to sound

just a little morbid to some of you but I have made my arrangements to have

my funeral in the little country church just down the road from my home

where I have been a member, church pianist, sung many specials, and taught

Sunday school for 45 years. I played and sung with a gospel band for over 9

years and we have made many tapes of our music. The songs that I want sung

are our very own songs with me either the featured singer or singing

harmony. They are all wonderful, uplifting, happy songs. When I get to

heaven I'll be doing the things that I love most. I'll be singing and

walking on those beautiful streets of gold. There'll be no more heartaches,

pain, sorrows, or tears. Now.....that's how I feel that your mother is .

She's at peace and she's waiting there for all of you girls. Please try to

look at it like this and it's so much easier to accept. She's already left

you a legacy of love. Now it's time for all of the family to follow her

lead and influence others like she has influenced you. I'm certain that she

was a wonderful mother to have raised such a sweet, kind, and caring

daughter like you. God bless all of you.

Love to all,

Tootie

It is true, . There are much worse deaths than my mother's. With

modern

medicine's remarkable ability to prolong our lives, even when our bodies

are

ready to let go, some people remain alive for years, but in a very poor

state, and often in great pain. We were lucky to find such a wonderful

nursing home, and Mom was alert and active long enough that she was able

to

spend time with the other residents and form close friendships. That

certainly makes our passing much easier. There was no end of friends

stopping by to hold her hand, caress her hair, and whisper loving and

encouraging words to her.

May we all be so lucky. Thanks once again to all of you for the

thoughtful,

touching words. So many others in the group have lost loved ones as well.

It's comforting to have this group as my extended family. I am glad

diabetes_int means so much to so many others.

Susie

Hi Everyone

Thanks you for your thoughts and prayers. I am headed back to the Home to sit

with my mom some more. She is not taking in any liquids at all now. Her skin is

waxy and dark. She has not been eating or drinking much for a few weeks now. I

know it is probably just a matter of time. I will write more when I get a

chance, but thanks again to you all for your thoughts and prayers. I could not

have made it this far without all of you. It's been a long journey.
