Menopause Naturally

Digestive Distress

by Susun Weed

Step 1. Collect information . . .

As the mix of hormones in your blood changes during your premenopausal years, you may notice the effects on your gastrointestinal tract both directly - estrogen is a gastrointestinal stimulant and varying levels may swing you from loose stools to dry ones - and indirectly, as the hormonal load places ever heavier demands on the liver.

Hormones have a strong effect on the motility of the intestinal tract. When your levels of estrogen and progesterone change (as they do throughout menopause, during pregnancy, and before menstruation and birth), your bowel patterns change, too. read Digestive Distress

Herbal Allies

* Withdrawing * Ulmus fulvaSlippery elm is a graceful tree found near streams and in wet areas throughout eastern North America (from Quebec to Florida and west to the Dakotas and Texas). I have been intrigued with this tree since I first met her.

Her inner bark is a superb source of nutrients and a universal antidote for poisons (even bacterial food poisoning). Whenever there are symptoms of gastro- intestinal distress, I think first of slippery elm. Careful harvesters take only branches; the bark of the trunk is not used.

After drying, the inner bark is powdered and then mixed with milk or honey before being fed (in tiny amounts, or from a baby's bottle if needed) to the womoon (or animal) in need. Slippery elm quickly stops violent diarrhea and allays even convulsive vomiting. It nourishes and restores life to the intestinal tract. Share your PERSONAL EXPERIENCES !! Slippery Elm

Health and Wellness Q & A

Elecampagne and elder for flu symptoms

Q: I am recovering from the flu, and am at the "cough your guts out" portion of the "program". My neck is sore from coughing, as is my chest and muscles I didn't know I had. I used ginger tea for the sore throat, which really helped, but the honey and onion cough "syrup" is just NO good for my stomach. Any help is much appreciated!

Here is some advice from Susun from the Q & A database:

Slippery Elm lozenges which you can find at health food stores, and wild cherry cough syrup can also provide relief. Linden flower infusion can be soothing as well, especially when cooked down into a decoction. Elecampane tincture is invaluable for combating lung infections, and Elder syrup eases persistent coughs.

Here is an article on how to avoid the flu, with specifics for Elecampane and Elder, www.susunweed. com/herbal_ ezine/November04 /healingwise. htm

Elecampane (Inula helenium)The tincture of this root is a favorite for clearing lung infections and countering the flu. The usual dose is 10-15 drops 2-3 times a day, but I would increase the dose to 6 times a day in an acute situation. I expect to see results within a day or less. I would only take elecampane if I had an active infection; it has little protective value. I never use elecampane capsules.

Elder (Sambucus canadensis)Elder flowers are a nice remedy for those with a feverish cold, but for those with the flu, I prefer elder berries. The most common way to take them is in the form of a syrup. The immune enhancing properties of elder berries are renowned in Europe and slowly gaining popularity in the United States. Elder berry syrup also eases coughs and lung congestion.

Perfume free laundry detergent

For a large load of laundry, mix:1 full cereal size bowl of baking soda1 full cereal size bowl of white distilled vinegar1/2 to 1 full cereal size bowl of Borax

Instructions: Begin a load of laundry. As water fills the washing machine, pour the baking soda. Make sure you empty the bowl of all the baking soda residue and then pour the vinegar.

The reason for this is that when you pour the vinegar in the bowl while there's some baking soda residue, the 2 ingredients fizz when mixed together and you don't want the bowl to overflow before you pour the ingredients into the washing machine. This mixture is great because it's affordable, easy to use, non-toxic, earth-friendly and completely free of toxic petro-chemicals and irritants.

We use this efficient method every time we do laundry and we always have very positive results! Copyright 2009 D. A. Colvingo to Caring For Our Bodies, the Earth, and Ourselves! weblog
