Compact Fluorescent Lights Dumping Mercury Directly into Landfills

At HFA we have mentioned many times about the law of unintended consequences. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs have become very popular over the past several years. They save energy, and promote environmental responsibility. While they may use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, CFL bulbs are filled with toxic mercury that, when disposed of, contaminates landfills and the environment.

A report released in 2008 from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection revealed that when a CFL bulb is broken, it can release dangerously high levels of mercury into the air. Mercury-vapor standards generally allow for 300 nanograms of mercury per cubic meter of air, however a broken CFL bulb can emit upwards of 50,000 nanograms per cubic meter, or more than 166 times the safe upper threshold.

It seems that simply turning off the lights has less evironmental impact on our health as well as the planet. In our rush to 'save' the planet we have poisoned it. Antidepressants: The Emperor's New Drugs?

There has been a lot of controversy lately over how well antidepressant drugs work. It seems in fighting depression the placebo effect has an even greater healing ability then normal.

More than half of the clinical trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical companies showed no significant difference at all between drug and placebo. What they did find was differences in side effects, like nausea and sexual dysfunction, produced by antidepressants; and the FDA later determined that SSRIs, the most common type of antidepressants, actually increases the risk of suicide for children, adolescents and young adults.

So why did the FDA approve these drugs? All they require is that there are two trials showing a statistical difference between drug and placebo. The drug company might have conducted 10 trials, and most have them might have failed to show positive results. Still, if there are two trials that have been successful, the antidepressant can be approved. And even in these two successful trials, it doesn't matter how large the drug effect is. It can be small enough to make no real difference in people's lives. It doesn't have to be clinically significant; It just has to be statistically significant. Please think twice before being lulled into thinking a 'happy' pill will wash away your problems. Instead, speak with a nutritionalist about diet and supplementation.Click here for more information

Reduced Fertility Linked To Flame Retardant Exposure

Women with higher blood levels of PBDEs, a type of flame retardant commonly found in household consumer products, took longer to become pregnant compared with women who have lower PBDE levels, according to a new study. They found that each 10-fold increase in the blood concentration of four PBDE chemicals was linked to a 30 percent decrease in the odds of becoming pregnant each month.

There here have been numerous animal studies that have found a range of health effects from exposure to PBDEs, but very little research has been done in humans. This latest paper is the first to address the impact on human fertility, and the results are surprisingly strong.

Vitamin D Promotes Weight Loss

In our ongoing series about the health benefits of vitamin D it seems the Sunshine vitamin holds no bounds in it's ability to protect the human body. A new study now shows the vitamin can help you lose weight!

When combined with a reduced-calorie diet, it appears that supplementation with vitamin D helps to promote increased weight loss among those whose levels are low to begin with.
