Hi

Why doesn't she give blood as a donor at the blood bank? They won't charge

and it will be going to a good cause. I'm pretty sure that haeachromatosis

doesn't exclude you from being a donor.

Sharita.

Subject: haemachromatosis

Dear all

A colleague has asked me to post this one:

A young woman in New Zealand has haemachromatosis which requires regular

blood letting to keep iron levels down - they also charge her $70 a time!

she would like to know if there is any possible herbal treatment which will

remove iron (along the lines of chlorella and mercury I guess).

many thanks for any input

Herbert

Hi ,

Ironically enough, my father in law had this and has made great progress

just by changing his diet.

The basic principles are to avoid too much iron in the diet and to try not

to eat things together that will increase iron absorption:

e.g. my father in law was eating a fair bit of red meat and followed each

meal with a piece of fruit (vit C) which would have increased absorption of

the iron from the meat. He also drank red wine every night (quite high in

iron).

My recs would be:

*reduce quantity of high iron foods including things such as red wine,

guinness, molasses, red meat etc

*When you do eat iron rich foods, avoid vit C with them (broccoli is also v.

high in vit C)

*Dairy produce can inhibit iron absorption

Hope that helps a bit

Schia :)
