Hello Anne, I take payments by card all the time. It's a very big subject and you need to investigate thoroughly. Yes if you're tied to your bank then they may well charge up, I found the initial difficulty was getting someone to give me an account! For price competiviness Google it and work your way through. I have a web based system so I can create links for people to pay any amount if needed. To take cards there and then the machine usually needs a phone line, or things may have moved on, I could have this configured but since I move amongst three clinics it's not possible. Also if you want to take debit cards only then this is cheaper. It's the credit card aspect that's expensive.I personally use Worldpay, it's very secure and when your're dealing with potentially dodgy overseas transactions it's brilliant. I've never had a fraudulent transaction go through in all the time I've used it. Also their support if you need it is very good.Best wishes,Lorraine Lorraine Hodgkinson MRCHMHERBS AND HELPERS6, Butts Fold, Cockermouth,Cumbria, CA13 9HY. I just had a quick look on line Barklaycard charge £20 p.m. On top of this is the 3% charge per transaction. Does anyone else working on their own provide this facility? It does seem awfully expensive for us to have to fork out. Is there a cheap way? I know online payments can be made using paypal but it's a different situation in the consulting room. Anne Chiotis

Hello Anne, Just another point you can get people to prepay or pre approve payment or take a deposit on booking if you like. This means that if something goes wrong you do have a means of covering costs. Simply taking someone's card details at the time then processing later or getting them to prepay/approve themselves first. Personally I prefer that the customer does everything themselves, that way only they and the screen know their card details. Security has really tightened up over the recent years.LorraineLorraine Hodgkinson MRCHMHERBS AND HELPERS6, Butts Fold, Cockermouth,Cumbria, CA13 9HY. One of the clincs I worked at looked into it and found the saem so they gave a questionnaire to patients explaining this and asking if they wanted to pay a small extra fee to cover this and guess what requests to use card evaporated!

I have been resisting accepting credit card payments for consultations for some time now and only accepted cash or cheques.

Recently I find many patients expect to be able to pay by card since cheques are bing phased out. I just had a quick look on line Barklaycard charge £20 p.m. On top of this is the 3% charge per transaction.
