Guest guest
Oh, and hemp oil, borage oil might be exacerbating the problem? and what's her weight like? Any urinary symptoms during the flu? > I am looking for some ideas/suggestions/help with a patient I have > been seeing for about 18 months. Guest guest
If the swelling and joint problems started after a flu like episode, has rheumatic fever been ruled out or, if a child, juvenile arthritis? Would definitely think about boswellia as a brilliant anti-inflammatory or curcuma (with black pepper). Anne
Guest guest
I wonder if this could be PMR [often overlooked], as some of her symptoms point to that, lack of muscle tone, muscle weakness, upper body/limbs, eye involvement etc. all following a virus, which is often a trigger for PMR??? Deep Immune tonics, adrenal tonics, boswellia/curcuma. Look at emotional stress element past/present, as in my experience, there is a strong link with PMR, I don't know about Borage being c/i??? Hope this is helpful & potential to explore other areas of diagnosis, particularly if medics aren't sure either? Might be good idea to get a copy of blood work too karen > > I am looking for some ideas/suggestions/help with a patient I have been seeing for about 18 months. Guest guest
Meant to add...consider Uncaria, as I have had success in PMR, providing you can source good quality, as both a good immune & anti-inflamm :-) > > > > I am looking for some ideas/suggestions/help with a patient I have been seeing for about 18 months. Guest guest
Hi TimHave you/she considered Sjogren's syndrome, given that she has dry eyes? Best wishesFrances Frances E MBHMA, MNIMHMedical Herbalistwww.holisticherbal.co.uk020 8948 2140 (h)07855 783255 (mob) To: ukherbal-list Sent: Thursday, 2 February 2012, 13:03 Subject: Psoriatic arthritis? I am looking for some ideas/suggestions/help with a patient I have been seeing for about 18 months. The presenting complaint is swelling and stiffness in her hands. It effects both sides, the swelling is jelly like, between the knuckles and down the fingers, the stiffness means that she cant straighten her fingers, her hands and arms feel weak, the fingers are not hot or painful just swollen. She also has very dry eyes which often feel gritty. She does get some pain and occasional swelling in her knees and ankles although she puts this down to too much dancing. She has been like this since 2007 when she had a flu like illness which lead to inflammation in her hands, arms, knees and ankles which over about 6 months receded to just her hands. The medics initially thought it was carpel tunnel and now think it is RA but are not sure and prescribed methotrexate which she took but stopped due to side effects. Her mother has a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis but neither her nor her mother have any skin plaques. I have managed to make some improvement in the swelling and mobility but the hands ( and elbows) are still quite stiff. I am currently giving her Menyathes 20, Glyc 1:1 20, Apium 20, Urtica 20, Arctium 20, Capsicum 3. She also takes Borage oil (she is vegan) and Bvits. She had a break from this Rx over xmas due to a missed appointment and her hands began to swell again so it is obviously helping but not quite resolving the issue. Does anyone have experince with this condition? If so any suggestions as where to go next? Thanks Tim Moorhouse
Guest guest
Absolutely x2. And another well made point Kerry. Especially when there is now so much basic research seemingly to back this up. Now I refer those px's who show interest to view Prof. Kynthia Kenyon's video on TED relating to a genetic basis for the rational of low carb nutrition. A great speaker who walks the talk - her diet is now strict no carb. Kenyon Lab at UCSF, and Harvard seem to be trailblazing on this research. I figure it will take another 10 or 15 years for this have any impact on the mainstream - policy makers, doctors, media, food producers/ suppliers. And who are the quacks exactly...? Guest guest
Hi Tim, Obviously the dose is your therapeutic decision. I havent seen the case so this is a general suggestion for you to decide if this was appropriate for a hot pattern with Psoriatic arthritis. Please use your own judgement according to the history.Regarding the oils personally I would always recommend a fish oil based supplement, I understand she's vegan, but some of the committed veggies I see take fish oils. The veggie version is simply not the same animal!LorraineLorraine Hodgkinson MRCHMHERBS AND HELPERS6, Butts Fold, Cockermouth,Cumbria, CA13 9HY. I have considered various diagnoses such as PMR and Sjogren's syndrome and again in some ways they seem to fit and in others not. I have asked her if she could get her blood work from her doctor but she seems reluctant to do this. She says she doesnt want to tell them she isnt taking the methotrexate but I will have another go as it would be helpful. I have considered a no grains diet with her but I am not sure how to do this if she continues to be vegan! Any suggestions would be great. I guess I may have to point out that perhaps her diet is contributing to her condition and that she might need to reconsider. I dont think she will like that! I have been investigating Echium seed oil which seems to have higher levels of GLA and SDA than flax seed for omega 3, has anyone used this before? Zoe and other mention online resources and information about no grains/low carb diets can you suggest any good sites that I might be able to recommend to her? I also havent prescribed boswellia before so what would anyone suggest, tincture? capsules? dose? Also someone mentions curcuma and black pepper again would this be in capsules, dose? And Lorraine I am not sure what a swamping dose of smilax would be? Cheers Tim
