Guest guest
Help make safe food and justice for all a reality Help make safe food and justice for all a reality Cesar Chavez' mission was to make "Safe Food and Justice for All" a reality. Some organizations have taken up the work of promoting food safety while others have taken up the work of promoting social justice. The two, however, are interrelated and have thus both long been priorities of Chavez' United Farm Workers of America. The Center for Produce Safety, based out of agricultural research hub, UC , is a public-private partnership focused on researching science-based solutions to produce safety threats. It is a praiseworthy exercise in social responsibility to protect the public from possible hazards in our food supply. But looking to scientific solutions to such matters while ignoring the threats caused by poor working conditions is a limited approach. Please send a message to the Center for Produce Safety asking them to expand their idea of how to best protect the public from potential hazards in fruit and vegetable production. The Center recently accepted sponsorship from Giumarra Farms--a company whose record includes two heat-related farm worker deaths, a fine from the Kern County Ag Commissioner for failing to protect farm workers hired to spray pesticides, and a pattern of requiring levels of production from workers that interfere with their ability to take many important safety precautions in their work. Let's continue to strive for Cesar's vision--Safe Food and Justice for All! http://action.ufw.org/ucdavis Keep up with the Giumarra campaign at: http://action.ufw.org/giumarra Check out our website at: www.ufw.org and keep up with the latest news.
