Blackthorn Poisoning help!!

Hi ,

How are you doing? Hope all is going well on Storm Vogel.

I am just writing as my ankle is swelled up since it was pierced by a Blackthorn on Saturday.

The swelling is going down gradually but i was just wondering if you can recommend anything to help as I can't actually walk on it and am having to take days of Work.

Do you know of any herbalists in my area (Upminster, Essex) i could see?

Cheers,

Blackthorn thorns often turn septic as it is hard to get all of the thorn out.

Just wondered if there was a little fragment of buckthorn in the patients ankle. In the past with this problem I have used both green clay and slippery elm poultices, both have worked well, in extracting the thorn. Tina.Alder.

Hi ,Blackthorns produce a very small amount of an essential oil that can lead, even in minute quantities, to terminal damage INSIDE the joint capsule of some farm animals, notably horses, where it is a matter of some economic concern with sport horses. I have no idea if this happens with humans (doubt it or it would be better understood) and also from Rosie's description doubt that she has penetrated the actual capsule. But it seems possible that this obscure oil may have set up an inflammatory reaction out of all apparent proportion to the amount involved. Glad to hear it's going down gradually.

Am going to reply to this e-mail - but is there anyone in Essex who can pick this up?

And out of interest, is there something about Blackthorn I don't know about - or is this likely to be an ordinary idiosyncratic histamine response?

Yes, very commonly causes problems, many tales here (Mid wales) of

people losing fingers when they neglected blackthorn injuries. Often

" goes bad " they say, and cite a poison as cause. Vigilance essential

best wishes.

i've had a lot of experience of scratches, pricks, etc from

blackthorn/slow thorns going 'bad' - learnt to take care of them early

on (in childhood, through teens and early adulthood) - always good to

check nothing left in there, as well as to clean the wound. i think i

used to 'get away with' simply washing my hands (tended to be where i

got scratched) in a sink full of warm water with e.g. tea tree EO added.

i've probably successfully applied lavendar EO neat before. the fact

that i've not needed to treat this recently, suggests i've learnt to

take more care around blackthorn in adulthood ;)

sounds like this goes a little deeper tho. i think there's already been

a suggestion re drawing out the thorn. could equally draw the infection.

i'd probably mix a bit of myrrh and slippery elm powders and apply - as

a paste if the wound is dry, as powder if the wound is wet. tbh, i often

find myrrh powder applied to a wound that's not healing as quick/as well

as would like effective - used it recently post-surgery. might do the

trick on its own - the myrrh healing/cleansing, and the fact that it's a

powder being enough to draw the wound a bit if it's wet. sounds like

there's quite some inflammation - might be good to cool/soothe it a bit.

best,
