You could think about using herbal snuff - it may only be symptomatic, - but it takes the worry of pregnancy contra-indications. ( having said that, I did find a fantastic 18th century reference to midwives using snuff to expel the placenta!)

But I also wouldn't feel worried ( depending on history )of prescribing elderberry and Echinacea and marshmallow. And chest rubs externally.

And marshmallow (powder ideally) with calendula in muslin to use in the bath.

I would have thought that constituents of herbal snuff could cross the nasal mucosa and be absorbed directly into the bloodstream, bypassing hepatic screening. Therefore I think you would still have to avoid any herbs that are contraindicated in pregnancy. However, there are still plenty of antiviral and symptomatic herbs you can safely use in pregnancy.

I'd be inclined to agree with Aine, as I have always understood that

administering herbs via the nasal, buccal, rectal or vaginal mucosa (have I

missed any?) enabled by-passing of the liver and so can theoretically deliver a

more potent dose.

How about teas? Nice, warming, getting plenty of fluid in - Achillea, ,

Sambucus, Tilia to promote sweating and help elimination?

Actualy I would agree too - Sorry . I think I wrote that because the specific snuff I had in mind contained all herbs that I woudln't be concerned about giving in pregnancy, and also have a good topical local effect - Althea, Sambucus, Echinacea, Eyebright etc..

The issue of delivering herbs directly to the blood stream, by passing the digestion, is obviously a subject I find facinating, but frustratingly unchartered. My guess it is much more complicated than simply potentiating the dose -some herbs will need the liver to make them bio-available - others could be be significantly stronger were one able to ingest significant quantities - what happens to MAOIs without the liver for example? Have been prescribing hypericum baths ever since I heard a story about Saint. Columbo, on arriving in Scotland from Ireland, made a st 's wort poultice for a sad shepherd boy to put under his left armpit - so far no patients with dramatic reactions! Have gone off topic - but would love to understand this more...

Thanks for your replies Marilena, Aine, Alison and . I need to get myself a book on herbs in pregnancy to improve my knowledge. I have advised her not to gargle with goldenseal but she is doing it anyway. Interesting re the SJW poultice (why the left armpit in particular?) Have you had good results with the hypericum baths?n

No idear why left armpit! - A Irish herbalist told me the story round a campfire, when we were doing herbal first aid, one rainy ish festival..

Re the hypericum baths - is hard to say. Can't say that have dramatically positive results - but wouldn't really expect that. Folk like taking them, and I have begun to integrate them as a standard winter anti-viral and mood strategy. Beware the orange baths afterwards -is surprisingly hard to get off, though fades with time!
