Hi

could those of you who regularly use medicinal mushrooms tell me who you think do the best and in which form do you tend to use them . I always thought capsules were preferred due to problems with the polysaccharides and alcohol but I see that many suppliers do produce tinctures. not really had chance to read up enough about the whole subject to know enough so thought other peoples expertise would be useful!

thanks , annette

HI Annette,Without wishing to 'put you on the spot', does anyone really know what are the 'problems with polysaccharides and alcohol'? I have always thought that this is a 'rumour' that has been going around for many years, without any sound basis.

Sugar definitely does not dissolves in alcohol to any great extent but polysaccharides in tinctures are, of course, slightly more than concentrated simple solutions of sugar in alcohol and that's what makes the big difference.

Kind regards,

>>Without wishing to 'put you on the spot', does anyone really know what are the 'problems with polysaccharides and alcohol'? Not sure if this is helpful:

, in his book Medicinal Mushrooms (pub. Mycology Press), states "Ethanolic extraction . . extracts more triterpenes but fewer polysaccharides [because] ethanol precipitates the polysaccharides out of solution".

used to run an excellent forum http://www.mycoprosupport.com/ However, I can no longer access it.

Hobbs, in his book Medicinal Mushrooms (pub. Botanica Press), recommends a "double extraction", first tincturing his mushrooms in a high concentration alcohol, then decocting and concentrating the mark, adding it to the alcohol extraction. He writes "based on my experience, this "double extraction" is richer in the immune-activating and anti-tumor polysaccharides, as well as the protein-bound polysaccharides"

I've just flicked through my favorite mushroom book: "Mycelium Running" by Stamets: In my brief search, I couldn't find anything about the solubility of mushroom polysaccharides in alcohol, but, if you want a really wonderful book about mushrooms, this is The One! Extremely well researched, fabulous pictures and full of absolutely enthralling and fascinating information about every aspect (including medicinal) of mushrooms.
