Flu vaccination ban goes national after fever, convulsions in

children

Seasonal flu vaccinations

across Australia for children under five have been suspended after 23

children in Western Australia were admitted to hospital with convulsions

following their injections.

Health Minister Kim Hames last

night advised of the state-wide suspension as a precautionary measure. He

said the suspension came after a significant rise in the number of children

who had developed a high temperature after receiving the vaccine. He said

some children had gone into febrile convulsions, a fit caused by a high

fever, following the vaccinations.

Broccoli

'could aid breast cancer fight'

The vegetable, already hailed

as a so-called "superfood", contains a chemical capable of targeting the

cells which fuel the growth of tumours. A component of broccoli called

sulforaphane targets and kills cancer stem cells as well as preventing new

tumours from growing, according to researchers at the University of

Michigan. Current chemotherapies do not work against cancer stem cells.

Researchers believe that eliminating the cancer stem cells is key to

controlling cancer.

The study, published in the

journal Clinical Cancer Research, charts how scientists at the university's

Comprehensive Cancer Centre tested the effects of sulforaphane in

experiments involving mice and cell cultures. Prof Duxin Sun, the author of

the study, said: "Sulforaphane has been studied previously for its effects

on cancer, but this study shows that its benefit is in inhibiting the

breast cancer stem cells. "This new insight suggests the potential of

sulforaphane or broccoli extract to prevent or treat cancer by targeting

the critical cancer stem cells."

Researchers took mice with

breast cancer and injected varying concentrations of sulforaphane from the

broccoli extract. They then used several established methods to assess the

number of cancer stem cells in the tumours. These measures showed a marked

decrease in the cancer stem cell population after treatment with

sulforaphane, with little effect on the normal cells. Cancer cells from

mice treated with sulforaphane were also unable to generate new tumours.

The researchers then tested sulforaphane on human breast cancer cell

cultures in the lab, finding similar decreases in the cancer stem

cells.

USDA downplays own scientist's research on ill effects of Monsanto

herbicide

What would happen if a USDA

scientist discovered that one of the most commonly used pesticides on the

planet with a reputation for having saved millions of tons of US soil from

erosion was - rather than a soil savior - a soil killer?

USDA scientist Dr.

Kremer has spent the last fifteen years looking at Monsanto's blockbuster

broad-spectrum herbicide glyphosate (aka RoundUp), the most commonly used

pesticide in the world and the companion to Monsanto's possibly

monopolistic RoundupReady lines of genetically engineered seeds. He has

found that glyphosate's side-effects in the ground are far more severe than

previously thought. As he described it, the use of glyphosate causes:

damage to beneficial microbes in the soil increasing the likelihood of

infection of a crop by soil pathogens interference with nutrient uptake by

the plant reduced efficiency of symbiotic nitrogen fixation overall

lower-than-expected plant productivity.

The USDA refused to publicize

his work on glyphosate. While USDA spokesperson Sandy Hays admitted

that an announcement about his findings was written, she claimed it was

withheld due to the quality of the writing. In other words, the USDA killed

the story because they couldn't bother to do some light editing.
