'Dirty

dozen' produce carries more pesticide residue

If you're eating non-organic

celery today, you may be ingesting 67 pesticides with it, according to a

new report from the Environmental Working Group. The group, a nonprofit

focused on public health, scoured nearly 100,000 produce pesticide reports

from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration to determine what fruits and vegetables we eat have the

highest, and lowest, amounts of chemical residue.

Most alarming are the fruits

and vegetables dubbed the "Dirty Dozen," which contain 47 to 67 pesticides

per serving. These foods are believed to be most susceptible because they

have soft skin that tends to absorb more pesticides. "It's critical people

know what they are consuming," the Environmental Working Group's Amy

Rosenthal said.

Toxic

A growing number of studies

are finding hundreds of toxic chemicals in mothers' and, subsequently,

their babies' bodies when they are born. While there is no science yet that

demonstrates conclusive cause and effect between this mix of toxic

chemicals children are born with and particular health problems, a range of

studies are finding associations between elevated levels of chemicals in a

baby's body and their development. Not definitive cause and effect, but

association.

For 80 percent of the common

chemicals in everyday use in this country we know almost nothing about

whether or not they can damage the brains of children, the immune system,

the reproductive system, and the other developing organs," said Dr. Phil

Landrigan, a pediatrician and director of the Children's Environmental

Health Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "It's really a terrible

mess we've gotten ourselves into."

The amount of chemicals

measured in the cord blood of the babies seems to matter. The higher the

concentration, the more the IQ among children seems to dip. While studies

continue about potential health risks to children from chemicals, experts

suggest ways to protect them from potential toxics, ranging from

incorporating organic food into their diet, to keeping the home relatively

dust-free (many toxic chemicals are conveyed in dust), to avoiding using

toxic chemicals found in common household products.

top-selling fragrance products-from Britney Spears' Curious and Hannah

Montana Secret Celebrity to Calvin Klein Eternity and Abercrombie &

Fitch Fierce -contain a dozen or more secret chemicals not listed on

labels, multiple chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions or disrupt

hormones, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety by the

teeth brushing linked to healthier hearts

People who don't brush their

teeth twice a day have an increased risk of heart disease, scientists said

on Friday, adding scientific weight to 19th century theories about oral

health and chronic disease.

British researchers studied

nearly 12,000 adults in Scotland and found those with poor oral hygiene had

a 70 percent extra risk of heart disease compared with those who brushed

twice a day and who were less likely to have unhealthy gums. People with

gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes because
