The government of Hong Kong recently issued a warning to its citizens against ingesting Ascaris worms for weight loss purposes. One of the latest diet crazes in the country, the practice of eating the giant intestinal roundworms has become so popular that the nation's Department of Health decided to make a public statement in opposition to it.

The idea behind eating worms to lose weight, is that the parasites burrow in the gut and help to eat people's food, thus reducing the amount of ingested calories. As revolting as it sounds, the practice has become quite popular in the developed far east where obesity rates have been steadily climbing

Ascaris worms can grow up to 40 centimeters in length and lay up to 200,000 eggs a day inside a person's intestine. According to spokesmen from the Hong Kong Department of Health, the parasites can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and malnutrition. FDA says studies on triclosan, used in sanitizers and soaps, raise concerns

The Food and Drug Administration said recent research raises "valid concerns" about the possible health effects of triclosan, an antibacterial chemical found in a growing number of liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, dishwashing liquids, shaving gels and even socks, workout clothes and toys.

The FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency say they are taking a fresh look at triclosan, which is so ubiquitous that is found in the urine of 75 percent of the population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Recent scientific studies raise questions about whether triclosan disrupts the body's endocrine system and whether it helps to create bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. At HFA we believe sometimes you can take political correctness a little to far, especially when it comes to your health. It seems our friends in England are having a little communication problem.

Patients have died because ministers failed to ensure foreign doctors working out-of-hours shifts can speak English properly, MPs said last night. It was wrong that Britain was sticking rigidly to EU rules which outlaw checks on overseas GPs' language skills.

The government is prevented from checking doctors' English under a European directive, which says to do so would hamper the free movement of people.
