Guest guest
My thoughts are: 1) They are VERY active on that show so they are burning a heck-of-a-lot of calories. 2) They are morbidly obese and have and have a LOT of weight to lose. 3) and MOST importantly, they are eating clean. 4) Their metabolism is revved from the sudden working out. They WILL reach a plateau and slow their progress. Hitting on item #3. They are now eating clean. Those people were consuming huge amounts of food before the show. Just imagine the amounts of food in their colon that is being expelled. I lost 10 pounds in a week JUST from cleansing my colon. These are my thoughts. I could be wrong! ~ Andy wrote: Does anyone have any idea how the contestants on the Biggest Loser post such huge weight losses in 1 week? Are they starving themselves or what? I haven't really heard any criticism of the show other than the results are a percentage of total body mass rather than seeing who loses highest percentage of fat. Guest guest
Some of the people have posted as much as a 20 lb loss in one week. Let's say 15 is often the average. 15 x 3500 calories to burn 1 lb=52,500 calories. Everyone will burn differently, but lets say 500 calories per hour depending on the activity which means 105 hours of working out in 1 week or 15 hours per day so I suppose it is doable. Just not realistic for those of us that have jobs! Guest guest
Hi Andy, I don't think you should be so critical of the show or the program. If BFL works for you, then great. I think it's obvious that the contestants on BL work out all day. That's why they are there - to concentrate on healthy eating and fitness. If it works for them, then it works for them. I think the lose of weight should be congratulated. I'm sure they worked out very hard for their results. However, if you were not being critical of the show or the program and I took your comments our of context, please accept my apology. Guest guest
I lived in Simi Valley, Ca. where they film this thing.. and the 24 hour fitness I worked at for a short time was their gym when off camera... Those people work out ALL freakin day long. They rest about 4 hours, and sleep about 6.5.... so .. thats about 13-14 hours a day of burning in some way.. of course not 100% max burning all day... but they swim, walk, run, get their trainers routines, swim some more, treadmill etc etc .. ALL DAY. Plus... they have people cooking and preparing their perfect meals as well. .... Re: Biggest Loser Some of the people have posted as much as a 20 lb loss in one week. Guest guest
Wow! That is a LOT to ask of anyone! The show is an awesome motivational tool but, as someone stated in an earlier thread, very unrealistic for the average person. ~ O'Connell wrote: I lived in Simi Valley, Ca. where they film this thing.. and the 24 hour fitness I worked at for a short time was their gym when off camera... Guest guest
Actually, I enjoy watching the show, but I think they invite criticism. Perhaps, more explanation from the trainers would help so we don't have these questions. I was just trying to wrap my mind around how they keep posting such big losses and I think that I have talked myself into believing it is possible with a LOT of hard work and discipline. I like both of the original trainers and Bob is my favorite. I think it is great they are helping a lot of people I'm sure it extends beyond those on the show. Guest guest
What I don't understand is how their skin is able to cope and remain tight during their transformations! Normally people end up with a lot of excess skin if they loose weight too fast. So wouldn't consecutive, 15 pound per week losses make them have to go through massive plastic surgery? > Actually, I enjoy watching the show, but I think they invite > criticism. Guest guest
If they go on to keep off the weight and help others after the show, I think it is all worthwhile. That's amazing they could function on such little sleep. I could do less without the drama too and would rather see more consultation between the trainers and the contestants. Guest guest
As for the loose skin, I think it really depends on the person, age, genetics, how long they were overweight, etc. I was just reading something from trainer Jillian where she says losing 1 - 2 lbs per week is realistic, but losing more with exercise and not starvation is not dangerous. The people on the show are under a physician and nutritionist care so they aren't doing anything unhealthy. She answers a lot of questions in an interview that I found <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2005/09/23/DI2005092301\ 271.html> Another interesting tidbit: (1) They experienced one free meal per week (sound familiar?), on Sundays, which was their rest day. (2) The scale was NOT real. It was a prop; they were weighed in that morning on an ultra-sensitive scale at the show's physicians' office. The reactions were real; they were seeing their weights on the monitor for the first time, but the scale itself was a farce. Guest guest
I lose 10 pounds for competition, am in reasonably good shape, do my ab reps religiously, and have this " pooch " of skin below my navel. I CANNOT get rid of it...............no matter what I do. I would love to be able to afford a knife job just to get rid of that skin. I KNOW I have abs under there, but will probably never see them, even when I get down to 119, which I am for competing. Grrrr.............. Guest guest
, I know we all have our own personal issues to deal with, but, as a mother, the world (and you) should not expect a poochless body. You know that I respect your ideas and efforts, but, I hope you NEVER undergo the pain and risk of surgery for the sake of tighter skin on your abs. You look marvelous! Leave the beauty, with which God has blessed you, be. BFLingly yours, Remember... Progress, not perfection! (even pooches)
Guest guest
Brad, I think the ability to maintain taut skin is aided by many factors, some of which we can control, others we can not. In my experience, it appears that hydration has a LOT to do with recovering from the excess skin stretch. Other factors include time, our age, how we treated our skin over the years, the extent of the stretching, family history, and more. Remember... Progress, not perfection!
