The

Federal Fat Police: Bill Would Require Government to Track Body Mass of

American Children

At Health Freedom Alliance we

are noticing that as the government is getting ready to make marijuana

legal this will leave them with one less way to control us, or so you would

think. But don't be fooled because as you may be able to smoke a joint

without getting arrested if you get the munchies you better think twice

about reaching for that bag of chips or worse yet the H�agen-Dazs which

pretty soon could result in mandatory jail time.

A bill introduced this month

in Congress would put the federal and state governments in the business of

tracking how fat, or skinny, American children are.

To pay for implementing BMI

data gathering, Sec. 102 of the bill states that the federal government

will give grants to states that meet certain criteria, including having

"the capacity to store basic demographic information (including date of

birth, gender and geographic area of residence), height, weight, and

immunization data for each resident of the state."

Pesticides

on Produce Tied to ADHD in Children

New research suggests that

exposure to high levels of organophosphate pesticides, commonly found on

berries, celery and other produce, could raise the odds for

attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

In their study, Bouchard and

her colleagues analyzed data on pesticide exposure and ADHD in more than

1,100 American children aged 8 to 15. Children with higher pesticide levels

in their urine were more likely to have ADHD, the team found. "The analysis

showed that the higher the level of exposure [as measured by metabolites in

the urine], the higher the odds of having ADHD,"

According to the authors, high

doses of organophosphates may inhibit acetylcholinesterase, a nervous

system enzyme. Lower doses of the pesticide may affect different growth

factors and neurotransmitters. The findings, if replicated, may provide

another clue into the causes of ADHD, a condition which affects three to

seven percent of school-aged children, according to the U.S. Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention.

New York midwives lose right to deliver babies at home

The city of more than 8

million people, with its reputation for being at the cutting-edge of modern

urban living, now lacks a single midwife legally permitted to help women

have a baby in their own homes. "It's pretty shocking that in a city where

you can get anything any hour of the day a person cannot give birth at home

with a trained practitioner," said Elan McAllister, president of the New

York-based Choices in Childbirth.

In 2008 the American Congress

of Obstetricians and Gynecologists put out a statement effectively

instructing its members to have nothing to do with the "trendy" fashion

towards home births. Yet despite Acog's stance, and despite the fact that

the US spends more money on pregnancy and childbirth-related hospital costs

than any other type of hospital care ($86bn a year), the country has the

unfortunate distinction of having one of the highest rates of maternal

mortality in the industrialised world. Its rate stands at 16.7 maternal

deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 7.6 in the Netherlands and

3.9 in Italy. Britain's rate is 8.2.

On top of that, about one in

three pregnancies in the US end in a caesarean section - a product, critics

say, of the highly interventionist approach that includes frequent induced

labours and epidurals. Amnesty International recently dubbed the US record

on childbirth as a whole a "human rights crisis".

are more midwives there would be less money for hospitals, less money for

doctors and most important of all less money for the trial lawyers. There

is not much profit in suing midwives.
