Robyn is a herbalist with much expertise and experience in this.

Co-incidentally a woman came on my boat this weekend who had recently had a serious C.V. related scare and was explain her new radical diet as prescribed by a naturopath she had just seen. In the conversation she asked could I suggest anything for her partner who had only slept two hours a night for the last five weeks! I asked about age and thyroid, and, low and behold she was menopausal and had been taking thyroxine for the last 20 years. The woman popped inherself , Sunday morning, and we only had a preliminary discussion (I am seeing her for a proper consultation on Thursday), so this is only early impressions, but I reckon one factor was that her partner's new radical diet , which they had adopted together, had sent her stabilized (ish) thyroxin levels through the roof... Or more to the point increased uptake of her own endogenous T3. Maybe. I will know more when we sit down and work together properly.

Have been successful in treating women who have recently been rx d thyroxine. But have another patient who has been on thyroxine for years, and have never made much impact on her blood tests. She prefers me to chase after the symptoms as they move and fluctuate, so that is what we do. While not registering in tests, in herself, she is very sensitive to change in herbs, and gets anxious about not being without them.

The good thing is you have the dual tool of your patient's experience - would organise possible/anticipated symptoms/warning signs into a scored monitoring chart - and easy to access blood tests.

reducing thyroxine

Has anyone had any experience of working with a patient who wants to see if they can reduce their thyroxine levels. This patient has been on hers for 20 years. She was on a 175mg dose but is now on 150mg dose. She has expressed a desire to reduce this as she has just recently spoken to someone who managed to come off it completely with the help of a medical herbalist. I was always under the impression (perhaps wrongly), that once you were on thyroxine, the thyroid stopped producing the necessary hormones and it was impossible to re-start. This lady is a very dynamic and healthy lady, doing lots of personal healing and energy work and feels the time is right now for her to attempt this. She feels if it doesn't work at least she has tried. Has anyone been successful? and if so, what was the strategy? I'd really appreciate any feedback.jean

I think the idea that restart is impossible is a myth. Years ago I

had a PCOS patient with associated hypothyroidism cease treatment

because the (holistic) treatment caused her thyroxine levels to rise

and she was too nervous of her doctor to suggest lowering her dosage.

(Shame, because her PCOS was balancing out nicely) (She was very

self aware and said that her thyroid levels had always tended to

fluctuate to a certain extent.

I treated a woman some years ago for thyroid as she was having to consistently increase her dose of Thyroxine. Herbs helped her TSH to come down so she could start to reduce the dose of thyroxine. Unfortunately, she was very erratic at taking the herbs so I never did manage to get her right off thyroxine but afaik her levels are pretty stable now.

I'd have to check my notes as it was some years ago but usually I give fucus in capsule form with a mix of herbs such as withania, juglans nigra ( Woods recommended fol at a NIMH conference several years ago but I don't think I could get the fol at that time and so went for the hulls) plus herbs that would suit the general presentation. this lady was under quite a bit of stress and was generally an anxious worrier - and menopausal! I think many women are Dx hypothyroid around this time of life due to the re-adjustment of the endocrine system. Already overstreched adrenal function adds to the problem. Other herbs that I can be used would be Piscidia and Phytolacca - although the latter is PMO in Ireland so I normally leave that one out.

I'll check my notes and if there's anything I've left out I'll get back to you.

Just one last throw in! I've used a nutritional formula which contains herbs I was busy constructing for a client with early thyroid disruption. Background of stress and adrenal exhaustion with Thyroid antibodies starting to develop as per s case. It was so close to my prescription that I decided to give that instead as easier for client. Great result! Gave a herbal stress mix too. Everything back to normal in 2 months on tests and symptoms relieved. If you're interested please contact me offlist. The supplement is by Innate and called Thyroid response.info@...LorraineLorraine Hodgkinson MRCHMHERBS AND HELPERS6, Butts Fold, Cockermouth,Cumbria, CA13 9HY.
