PHYTOTHERAPY RESOURCES

Brain and Behaviour: A Nutritional Perspective

with Kate Neil

Friday 8 and Saturday 9 June 2012

Mental health is considered a human right. Within the EU Member States depression is the most prevalent health problem; mental health problems are on the increase within the EU, with about 11% of people estimated to experience a mental health problem during their lifetime. Data suggest that up to 50% of mental health problems start during adolescence. 58,000 suicides occur each year across the Member States, and most of these are men. The burden to individuals, families and communities, as well as the economic cost, is immense. What role, if any, does nutrition play?

The first aim of this seminar is to provide practitioners with the potential for a range of personalised nutrition interventions based on identified biochemical imbalances and supported by laboratory assessments. The second aim is to rationalise personalised nutritional interventions for vulnerable individuals, taking into account various social, cultural and ethical concerns.

Practitioners should leave this seminar with an understanding of nutritional imbalances common to a number of mental health problems where nutrition may play a role, including: cognitive decline, depression, learning and behavioural problems, and psychotic illness.

Kate Neil MSc MBANT NTCC is Director of the Centre for Nutrition Education & Lifestyle Management. The Centre teaches BSc programmes in Nutritional Therapy and Nutritional Science, and an MSc in Personalised Nutrition open to all first science degree graduates. The degrees are validated by Middlesex University. Kate is Editor of the Nutrition Practitioner, and has published and lectured widely on the subject of nutrition; she has recently authored a chapter on glucose imbalance for Nutrition and Mental Health: A Handbook (2010). Kate has been using nutritional and functional assessments in her own practice for more than 20 years, and will present the application of laboratory assessments from this perspective: part of her clinic focuses on supporting parents of children with learning and behavioural problems. Kate teaches on nutrition and mental health at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The seminar is open to MDs, medical herbalists, nutritionists, osteopaths, TCM and Ayurvedic practitioners, acupuncturists and other appropriately qualified practitioners; students of these disciplines (year 2+ only) are also welcome. It will be held at the Lecture Theatre, Furnival Building, Middlesex University, 10 Highgate Hill, London N19 5NF, from 1.00 to 6.00 p.m. on Friday 8 June and from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on Saturday 9 June 2012. A buffet lunch will be served on the Saturday.

Fees for the seminar are: Practitioners: £120; students*: £80. Cheques, made payable to ‘Phytotherapy Resources’, should be sent to Colin Nicholls, Phytotherapy Resources, 38 Westwood Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 8TP; tel. 01892 547628/07802 494310; email: cnicholls@....
