This genre of medicine concentrates on the body’s inbuilt ability to heal and maintain itself. As such, the approach adopted is holistic and a naturopathic physician will seldom use surgery or drugs. Naturopathy is practiced in numerous countries, particularly Canada and the United States. There are various standards of regulation and grades of acceptance. The modern version of naturopathy is based on a health movement that started in the 19th Century which believed in natural healing. In several US states, naturopathic doctors are registered practitioners who offer primary health care in conventional medicine as well as naturopathy. They have to undergo at least four years of training and pass examinations. After this, they are awarded the title of Naturopathic Doctor (ND) or Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD). Apart from naturopathy, they study pharmacology and how to perform minor surgical procedures. The main objective of naturopathy is to prevent disease, improve health, and treat medical conditions. This is achieved through the use of herbal supplements, organic foods, a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise. Treatment often includes other alternative therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure, Ayurveda, and homeopathy. Wherever possible, a naturopath will avoid surgery and synthetic drugs. In addition, they are not in favor of treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy. Instead, the aim is to pinpoint the actual cause of the illness and to stimulate self-healing with the help of specific therapies and/or naturopathic medicines. Nutrition plays an extremely important role because the belief is that many illnesses and diseases can be linked to a patient’s nutrition. The naturopathic doctor will determine the relationship between health and diet and devise a plan to eliminate the illness. This includes the use of supplements that contain natural ingredients, e. G. Enzymes, minerals and vitamins. The ancient Chinese therapy, acupuncture, is often used. Very thin needles are inserted into pressure points of the body. It wasn’t until recently that the western world recognized the efficacy of this traditional technique. It relieves pain, promotes healing and stimulates the flow of the body’s natural energies. Before any naturopathic remedies are considered, a first-time patient will have a long interview with the doctor. This focuses on his or her lifestyle, medical history, emotional wellbeing, and diet. The patient will also undergo a physical examination. Naturopathy has shown to be effective in the treatment of numerous medical conditions. Some include insomnia, respiratory infections, high blood pressure, heart disease, eczema and acne, depression, migraines, and chronic fatigue.
