Hi Kerry,I assume you have checked whether this patient is deficient in Vitamin A? Topically I would use the standard eye drops available in Chemists. After all it's only lubrication that's necessary. Also using a humidifier int he house. Cheers Anne From:

Hello,

I have a post stroke patient who is experiencing the above

condition. As she is on quite a few conventional medications, I am

looking for topical help. I see Bartram recommends castor oil

topically; has anyone tried this or found another solution?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Kind regards,

Kerry

Thanks Anne.

Interestingly, she does not feel she has xerophthalmia but was told

she has it by her optometrist. Her vitamin A levels have not been

checked however, she wanted to get onto symptomatic relief in the

meantime. As she doesn't want to use conventional eye drops, I said

I would check into other options.

So, has anyone tried castor oil drops or any other topical

treatments?

Cheers,

Kerry

One remedy for dry eyes is fish oil ... it can be an EFA deficiency.

1-3 tablespoons a day might just clear it right up.

(Also check for drying medicines and/or herbs ... nettle tea can make for dry

eyes in dry climates all by itself; there, too, fish oil helps, along with

mucilaginous herbs added to the nettle.)

Omega 7 as in sea buckthorn oil is meant to be specific. Try googling it Helen To: ukherbal-list Sent: Thursday, 12 July 2012, 10:48 Subject: Re: Xerophthalmia > > have tried fresh breastmilk - from breastfeeding mum - into eyes, works> really well for dry, itchy eyes.can apply directly, or from a dropper> bottle.keep in fridge to keep it fresh.it is an old fashioned folk remedy> from all over the world.Marilena.One remedy for dry eyes is fish oil ... it can be an EFA deficiency.1-3 tablespoons a day might just clear it right up.(Also check for drying medicines and/or herbs ... nettle tea can make for dry eyes in dry climates all by itself; there, too, fish oil helps, along with mucilaginous herbs added to the nettle.)H.-- Henriette Kress, AHG Helsinki, FinlandHenriette's
